La Fermette (farmhouse)

Home description

La Fermette is a charming 19th century Charentaise farmhouse with barns and an orchard field, which once belonged to the nearby chateau. The character of the cottage has been retained with original charentaise fireplaces, exposed beams and stone walls.

The large and spacious rooms have original wooden floors throughout. The grenier (hayloft) was converted into two bedrooms in 2006 with exposed beams and stone walls. In the barn attached to the cottage is a games room with full size table tennis table, pool table and table football.

Located in a peaceful hamlet surrounded by fields of sunflowers and vines this is an ideal place to relax and unwind. The network of lanes around the house are ideal for cycling and walking, and there is an abundance of wildlife in the area - deer, birds of prey, rabbits, and even wild boar.

The nearest shops and restaurants are only 2 minutes away in St Genis, whilst the beautiful sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast are only 30 minutes drive.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

The Charente Maritime is reknowned for it's beautiful sandy beaches. - so many that you could visit a different beach every day of your holiday. The best surfing beaches are north of Royan.

Ile de Re and Ile D’Oleron have a different feel about them – the former being popular with French TV celebrities and Parisians! Both islands offer good surfing.

This is wine growing country where free tastings are available at many vineyards. It’s a short drive to the little known Blaye region, the Medoc, Bordeaux and St Emilion. Or simply take a tour of the many local producers of Pineau (the region’s aperitif) and Cognac, near La Fermette.

Pons / Bribaudon area

The nearest boulangerie is in St Genis de Saintonge (2 mins) where you’ll also find shops, restaurants and a bank with 24 hour cash point. The nearest supermarkets are only 10 minutes away.

Visit the Roman town of Saintes (20 mins), or the citadel town of Blaye (40 mins). Take a drive to Cognac (35 mins) and tour one of the world famous distilleries. Visit the mediaeval towns of Jonzac (15 mins) with its 15th century chateau, and Pons (10 mins) with it’s Donjon. La Rochelle with its historic port and quayside restaurants is under an hour away.

There are many small markets locally, and in the summer months there are weekly night markets in Jonzac, Montendre and Cozes.

How to get there

By Air:
Easyjet, Flybe, BMIBaby and Ryanair fly from numerous UK regional airports to Bordeaux, La Rochelle and Angouleme (all within an hour's drive of La Fermette), as well as to Poitiers, Bergerac and Limoges airports. Car hire can be arranged at each airport.

By Car:
La Fermette is 10 minutes from the A10 motorway (J36) south of Pons). St Malo is 4.5 hour drive, whilst Caen, Cherbourg, Le Havre and Roscoff are around 6 hours drive. Allow 6 - 7 hours if travelling from Calais and Boulogne.

By Rail:
The TGV from Paris calls at Poitiers, Angouleme and Bordeaux (St Jean). Car hire is available at the station.

The antique double bed in the downstarirs bedroom is a French size double bed, which at 4ft is slightly smaller than the UK standard.

At the front of the cottage and to the side is the garden where you can sit and enjoy a BBQ in the Charente sunshine.

Behind the cottage is an orchard field where the children can play, or where you relax in the balmy summer evenings sipping a glass of wine and enjoying the view across the fields to the village of St Palais de Phiolin.

There is car parking space in the shade of the open barn.

You can secure your booking with a deposit of 20% . The balance plus £100 (refundable) damage deposit is due 6 weeks before your holiday start s.
