Home description
Les Tilleuls is an old Charentais farmhouse and distillery in the pretty hamlet of Echebrune, surrounded by rolling hills, fields of sunflowers and cognac vineyards. The barn has been converted to provide a spacious 4 bedroom gite, La Grange, and the ancient cognac distillery, which still retains the original alembic, has been converted into a cosy 2 bedroom gite, Le Chai. Both have their own private patio area, access to 3 acres of meadowland and stunning views over the surrounding countryside. Enjoy the tranquility of the French countryside, visit the local 12th century church on the hillside, wander along the chalk lanes through the vineyards, cycle around the local villages or just laze by the 12x 6m pool!

Les Tilleuls nestles at the foot of the hill in the small hamlet of Echebrune in the Charente Maritime region of south west France. The Charente Maritime region is renowned for its sunny, mild climate and its variety of sights and places to visit. The area is very proud of its hectares of vineyards stretching in the distance producing the world renowned cognac, and also in mid-summer the vivid colours of the sunflowers interspersed with villages of mellow charentais stone and gardens abounding with hollyhocks, wisteria and geraniums. Visit the pretty ports and beaches of the Gironde or venture further to the surfing beaches of the Atlantic, explore the the historic towns of Cognac, Saintes, La Rochelle or Bordeaux or enjoy a round of golf at one of three local 18 hole courses.
Pons area
Echebrune, with its beautiful hilltop XIth century church, is just 4 miles from the pretty town of Pons which, with its mediaeval keep and pilgrims hospital, provides supermarkets, banks, post office, bars and restaurants and a twice weekly market. Les Tilleuls is also conveniently situated for the old town of Cognac with the houses of Hennessy, Martell, Remy Martin, etc offering fascinating guided tours of their cognac distilleries which, of course, include tastings! The Roman town of Saintes, with its Roman amphitheatre and bustling shopping centre, is also close by as are the beaches around the resort town of Royan. The pretty fishing ports of the Gironde estuary are within 30minutes. For children, visit the renowned zoo at La Palmyre, discover the Chateau des Enigmes at Pons or enjoy a day at the ‘Antilles de Jonzac’ an aqua playground of 10,000 sqm. Or just simply relax, explore the pretty surrounding villages and try Pineau des Charentes, the local aperitif

FERRY: Brittany Ferries or Condor Ferries to St Malo, Caen or Cherbourg. LD Lines to Le Havre or Dieppe. Speedferries or P&O serve both Boulogne and Calais. ROAD: 5 hours from St Malo or Caen, 7-8 hours from Calais or Boulogne take the A10 motorway to Pons, junction 36. Les Tilleuls is only 10 minutes from this exit. AIR: Bordeaux, 1 hour away by motorway with BA, Flybe, BMI Baby or Easyjet La Rochelle also 1 hour by motorway with Ryanair, Flybe or Easyjet, all from many regional UK airports RAIL: By TGV to Angouleme Car Hire is available at airports and in local towns - Hertz, Europcar, Avis, etc

Further details indoors: La Grange is a spacious 4 bedroom gite and although completely modernised still retains the character of the original barn. The ground floor is open plan with a fully equipped kitchen, island unit with hob and oven and a breakfast bar opening on to the living area which has French windows on two sides, exposed beams, original stone walls and seating for 10 people The dining area has a large pine table and also seating for 10 people. There is also a shower room and toilet on this floor. Stairs lead to 4 bedrooms, 2 with double beds, exposed stone walls and superb views over the pool and garden. There are also 2 bedrooms with twin beds and a bathroom with shower and toilet. A private patio area surrounds the property with access to the garden and meadowland and views over sunflower fields and vineyards. La Grange is fully centrally heated for all year round holidays.
Further details outdoors: From the french windows step out on to the gravelled patio with dining table and chairs, parasol and barbeque over looking the pool and meadowland. There is also access to the enclosed parking area and children's play area with swings. The 12 x 6 m pool is fitted with a safety alarm and roman steps lead to the 1m depth with a gentle slope to the 2m depth. The pool is surrounded by raised decking with room for sunloungers, lunching beside the pool or just lazing in the shade of the walnut tree!

La Grange is attached to Le Chai, a smaller 2 bedroom gite and the property can be let as a whole sleeping up to 12 people if required. All linen, bedding and towels are included and changed weekly - pool towels are available. A welcome pack is provided on arrival and we can also provide a meal on arrival at 15 euros (including wine) - please ask for details. We are also happy to introduce you to our local wine and cognac producers for a tour of their distillery and a chance to taste the local product!! For anyone interested in purchasing in the area, we are always happy to share our experiences of purchasing and renovating a charentais home.
Conditions
Normally, bookings are 4 pm Saturday to 10 am Saturday but we can be flexible, especially out of season, and are happy to take mid-week bookings and offer discounts for long or short term bookings.
