The Campania region

The archaeological excavations of Pompeii have yielded the remains of the ancient city of Pompeii , near the hill of Civita , buried under a blanket of ash and lava during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 , along with Herculaneum, Stabiae and Oplonti.

The excavations began at the behest of Charles III of Bourbon, are one of the best examples of Roman life , as well as the best-preserved cities of the time , most of the finds recovered ( in addition to simple furnishings everyday even frescoes , mosaics and statues ) , is now kept in the national Archaeological Museum in Naples and in small quantities in the Antiquarium at Pompeii , which is currently closed : the very considerable quantity of finds was useful to understand the uses , customs, eating habits and the art of life of more than two millennia ago.

The site of Pompeii, in the first decade of the new millennium was constantly visited by over two million people per year, was found to be the second in 2010 for Italian archaeological site visitor numbers (preceded only by the museum system that includes Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine ) . In 1997 , in order to preserve the integrity and stress its importance , the ruins , now managed by the Special Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Naples and Pompeii , as well as those of Herculaneum and Oplontis, have become part of the list of assets of ' humanity by UNESCO.
