The Black Sea Coast region
Black Sea Coast . If you're looking for a great-value Mediterranean style holiday on perfect golden sandy beaches with beautiful, clear seas and a sunny, seasonable climate from May through October, consider the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. The beaches face east, offering wonderful views of the sun coming up over the water, and all the resorts are within easy access to Bulgaria's many inland attractions, which include Roman ruins, ancient castles and monasteries, and many vineyards. The waters of the Black Sea are calm and without strong tides, making them ideal for children.
Pomorie / Sunset Resort area
Pomorie The town of Pomorie is located on a narrow rocky peninsula, which is indented 3,5 km into the Black Sea. 20 km from Bourgas and 18 km from the popular town of Sunny Beach Pomorie – is split into two and the older part is worth a visit for its shopping and dining out and night life. The resort has unique natural location, which makes it an attractive place for recreation and rehabilitation. The weather conditions are exceptionally favourable: Continuous sunshine, up to 2360 hours annually, The average temperature of the air and the water in July is 23.6°?. The consecutive breezes from the sea to the land and from the land to the sea freshen the air rhythmically. In the morning the air is rich in ozone and iodine emitted by the seaweed. Because of the slow cooling of sea water, the autumn is warm and long. Pomorie’s coast is low and sandy, with a completely open horizon to the east and west, and defended to the north by the beautiful Stara Planin mountains. Pomorie bay beaches are long. Old Pomerie the beaches and the sea are a part of the lively town which offers its guests all amenities required for a calm family vacation.
There are convenient transport communications connecting Pomorie with other towns and resorts, and the airport in Bourgas is only 8 km away.
The proximity of Sunny Beach and the district centre Bourgas increases the possibilities for entertainment. The aquatic area of the Pomorie bay is a favourite for water sports – a favourite place for the amateur anglers.
PLACES TO VISIT
Bourgas
The city is full of restaurants, pubs, beer-houses, taverns, and refreshment stalls and groceries. The most famous restaurants are National, Staryat Pristan, Starata Gemiya, Bourgaska Sreshta as well as the hotels' restaurants. Most of the high-class restaurants have live music, while some offer show programmes, too. 2 courses and several beers cost about £5(13lev).
Away from the busy centre of the city with great shops, restaurants and nightlife is the shady Sea Garden, a lovely place to stroll on the hot summer days. A beautiful forked staircase in verdure leads from the park down to the central beach of the city.
Festivals
Five days of the Classical German and Austrian music – at the end of April • International Theatre Festival of Small Forms called “Theater in a Case” – May and June • Three-week Festival of Opera and Classical Music in memory of the conductor Emil Chakurov – July. • International Folk Festival and Week of the Arts for Children – August • International Pop- and Jazz- Meeting called “Bourgas and the Sea” – September • International Tournament for Standard and Latin American Dances – December.
Surrounding Areas
The lake of Pomorie is located 20 km north of Bourgas and is surrounded by salt mines and balneo-resorts, as well as the town of Pomorie The Atanasovo lake is to the north too. It is a home for many marsh and sea birds migrating from Gibraltar and the Bosphorus. The Bourgas Lake is near the town. Pelicans, ibis, and herons nest there. The Mandra lake is 10 km south of Bourgas and is also an important ornithological reserve. The island of St. Anastasia is three sea miles east of the town. There is a well preserved old church. The salt mines of Bourgas are a sight of interest. They border the Bourgas Lake, and some of them even stretch to the Atanasovo lake. The Mineral public baths are 13 km north-west of the town in the direction to Aitos. There are the remains of the old Roman town built around the mineral springs. The village of Kraimorie is to the south of Bourgas on the way to the old fortress of Pirgos. The park Otmanli is 15 km away from the town near the Chokalya cape.
Sunny Beach.
With 120 - and counting – hotels accommodating some 45, 000 visitors. Sunny beach is the most popular and busiest resort on the Black Sea coast and a great place to visit. There are at least a zillion eating establishments of all shapes, sizes and descriptions featuring a wide range of cuisine, Traditional Bulgarian folk-style mehanas are well-represented by the Vyaturnata Melnitsa (Windmill), Buchvata (Barrel), Chuchura (Fountain), and a host of others. The most unusual is the Hanska Shatra (Khan's Tent) which sits atop a hill several kilometers north of Sunny Beach. Set in a secluded wooded setting with beautiful views of the coast below, the spot is supposedly the one where Khan Krum had a military encampment in 812. The large, rounded structure has twenty curved concrete columns inside which connect at the apex, resembling a huge tent such as was used by the Proto-Bulgarians. The interior is decorated with mosaics, one of which depicts the Khan feasting. Waiters wear period costumes. Live folk music starts nightly at seven, followed by an hour-long elaborate floor show. Predictably, the place is touristy - and expensive - but, what the heck, it's certainly worth the visit and its a vacation.
Sozopol.
Located 34 km south of Bourgas on a slender rocky peninsula, Sozopol is one of the earliest towns on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast and dates from 2,610 years ago and a must to see The archaeological findings testify to the presence of the Thracians as its first inhabitants. In 620 B.C. immigrants from the rich city of Milet - the largest Southern Greek centre on the Asia Minor coast - turned the old Thracian settlement into a rich Hellenic colony - the independent city-state Apollonia-Pontica Today Sozopol is a popular beach resort best known for its casual ambience, two sandy beaches, and distinctive 19th century stone and wood houses, some 45 of which are national cultural monuments. While Sozopol is extremely busy during July and August, in the off-season it reverts back to a sleepy fishing village and is a favoured haunt of artists and writers.
Nessebar .
The town of Nessebar is one of the oldest towns in Europe. Any poets, artists, or people who simply love the beauty of life, will find all they need only 3 km away from Sunny Beach. In Nessebar, there are narrow cobble lanes, aged wooden houses with drying fish hanging from the roofs, mediaeval churches, fortress walls, and the living monument of millennial human history . The town greets you with its cafes, where you can take a rest under the shades of the trees before you start with your shopping marathon. Here you will see 2 streets one left and one right. Take the left if you want to visit the endless shops and souvenirs ,and the right if you want to take a walk through the old houses and beautiful renaissance architecture. You should take a day to just walk around this old town. Prices are very reasonable for all goods.
