About this location

The Tuscany region

The region is located in the central, western part of the country, north of Rome and south of Genoa. It is bounded by the Apennine Mountains to the North and East, the Apuan Alps on the northwest and by the Tyrrhenian Sea on the West.

From the Etruscans to the Romans to the Renaissance, Tuscany is possibly the greatest repository of art in the world, from extraordinary paintings and sculpture to frescoes and architectural masterpieces.

Tuscany: a row of cypress trees breaking the blue sky on a rolling hilltop. Olive groves and grapevines marching tidily down the side of a slope. Little medieval hill towns gazing down upon a country that has been carefully cultivated.

Florence is the capital of Tuscany. Other important cities are Siena, Pisa, Arezzo, Pistoia, Prato, Lucca, Livorno, Grosseto, Massa Carrara.

Although being ideally situated for a completely relaxing holiday, the property, thanks to its position, is a good starting point both for enjoying the nearby beaches of the Tuscan coast (40 km) as well as the most renowned art centres of the region: Volterra 40 km, San Gimignano 50 km, Siena 75, Florence 80 km, Pisa 90 km.

"Spring Delight"

This property was a dream, situated away from the hustle and bustle of Florence and Pisa in a quite backwater of Tuscany. About 1.5hrs drive south from Pisa you are greeted by an olive and poppy lined track to a beautiful free standing property in the grounds of a larger but still very private family house. The owner is very friendly and made us feel welcome but left us to our own devices during the week. There is a fully fitted kitchen with gas cooker and oven, TV, DVD player and wifi. The house is spacious and tranquil. The swimming pool is bigger than it looks in the photos and adds to the relaxed feeling of the terrace area. Great for BBQs (we had 2). You can buy charcoal in nearby Pomarance which is about 3km drive. This property is ideal for couples looking to spend time together rather than families or larger groups. Pomarance is a lovely unspoilt town with local shops selling good quality local produce and easy to park in the approach roads. This is the perfect location for a relaxing holiday with great food and wine at very affordable prices (£20 or less for meal with wine) will need to explore a bit to find the real gems of the area but be richly rewarded for your efforts. Be sure to have a coffee and croissant at the unnamed local cafe in the square, a perfect start to any day. We were well within day trip range to Siena, Florence and Pisa although we chose the local highlights such as historic Volterra and a quick drive to the coast at Montecastello to avoid the stresses of city visits. Head south to the small hilltop villages (e.g. rocca sillana) for a genuine sense of the past. All in all a perfect getaway and very much somewhere we'd like to return to. Late spring was definitely a good time to visit with the right balance of sunshine, freshness and complete absence of other tourists!
