Polperro harbour has always been and remains a working fishing port and at high tide you can watch the local boats unload their daily catch and take it to the fish quay on the inner harbour. If you talk nicely to the fishermen, you may even be able to acquire the freshest fish you have ever tasted – caught that day and probably still flapping! When the fishermen are not out at sea, they can usually be found mending their nets and pots down on the harbour quay – or enjoying a pint in one of the many superb pubs. Quite a number of fishermen are involved in providing the many fishing and boat trips that you can take from the quay at Polperro including pleasure cruises to Fowey and Looe.
Sheltered in its cliff inlet, Polperro is an exciting maze of narrow streets, small lanes, alley ways and tightly packed historic houses leading down to an unspoilt, picturesque harbour and coastline – an absolute delight to explore. Most of Polperro is largely inaccessible to motor vehicles and so it is very safe to walk around. The main car park is situated at the top of the village and it is a nice gentle half mile walk past the shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes down to the harbour. There are also trams available to and from the car park all year round.
Polperro is host to the annual Polperro Festival in June, a week of arts, crafts, live music and Morris Dancing, this long running event is a popular choice with our guests, many of whom return each year. Another popular event is the New Year Fancy Dress Party, this sees the whole village, and many visitors, engage in a night of revelry and merry making, against a back drop of the village and harbour decorated with Festive lights.
If you are interested in architecture and history, then there are countless historic houses and buildings of interest in the village. For example The Shell House, this is one of the most photographed properties in the village and was owned by Mr Samuel Puckey a retired naval man, he decorated the property using his lifetime's collection of shells from around the world. He started work in 1937 and it apparently took him five years to complete. You can now holiday at The Shell House which has been restored to a splendid family home.
Another example is Couch's House which dates from 1595 and in the 19th century was lived in by Dr. Jonathan Couch, physician, naturalist and collector of fossils. Dr Couch's History of Polperro, first published in 1871, provides a fascinating insight into the life of Polperro people, and their work and customs in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Fishing wasn't the only thriving industry in the 19th Century. Knitting was a necessary occupation for women and girls in Polperro, much of it done out of doors along the paths overlooking the harbour while waiting for the return of the boats, or watching the landing and weighing on the quay. In Polperro these garments were known as Knit-Frocks and the village was the source of contract knitters for more than a century. The tradition is still alive today, on a much smaller scale of course and as a source of pleasure rather than profit, and it was the subject of a BBC2 'Coast' programme in 2013.
Polperro literally oozes with history and if you are interested in finding out more, including smuggling and fishing, we recommend you visit the Polperro Heritage Museum, open every day from March to October and packed with interesting artefacts and displays of the life and customs of Polperro through the centuries.
But if you seek total relaxation and wish to escape the hectic pace of modern life, come to Polperro and simply sit and watch time slip away as the boats gently bob up and down in the picturesque harbour. Polperro is an ideal destination whatever the time of year - all you need do is soak up the peace and tranquillity.

"Lovely cottage, noisy location"
Lovely cottage in the special village of polperro. Noisy location at night due to refrigerator unit from ice cream shop opposite & very busy due to deliveries early morning. Back garden wasn't pr… More
Thank you for your feedback, the owner responds as follows:
I am glad you liked our cottage in Polperro and appreciate any constructive comments Good or Bad, regarding the noisy Refrigerator in the Ice cream shop on the other side of the road I must admit I have not noticed this before but shall look into this matter on my next visit, in reference to the persons coming in the side gate in the back garden this is only used by our neighbours who's garden is next to ours separated by the side path and fence as all the gardens in Polperro are separated, hope the slight intrusion of the neighbours going to their garden did not spoil your holiday and we hope to see you again.

"All You Need is Love"
The title refers to a plaque which hangs in the living room of this perfect romantic getaway and sums up the place completely. This cottage is probably the best we have stayed in in Polperro, it is cosy, romantic and in a practical sense, spotlessly clean and brilliantly equipped to a very high standard. We loved snuggling up on the L-shaped sofa, although we did struggle to get the log-burner to spark into action, it was warm enough without it!
The cottage is perfectly situated for the shops and restaurants, The Ship is just a few steps away and does a mean Chicken Jalfrezi! The Blue is the best pub in Polperro and we spent many an hour in there eating and drinking.
We couldn't have asked for more for our wedding anniversary break and didn't want to come home.
A message from the owner: Dear Guests, I would like to thank you for taking the time to review our little bit of heaven in Polperro and extremely happy you enjoyed your holiday, we hope to see you again in Strawberry Fields and will always endeavor to make your stay a great experience, Happy Anniversary

"Quirky but not 5* by a long way"
We had 5 nights at Strawberry Fields and our observations are:-
It is centrally located - BUT it is located right by the tram stop and two main car parks so very busy, very noisy and you could hear the trams being charged (electricity) all night - with the windows shut. So would be even noisier in the summer with windows open.
The photographs made the accommodation look much bigger than it actually is. 3 dinner plates, 2 tea plates - and yet a huge table in the kitchen to seat 6 which doesn't make any sense.
The only toilet is on the middle floor (3 storeys) and very small indeed.
The shelf in the bathroom over the basin meant that you couldn't use the basin to clean your teeth, shave etc without throwing water all over the floor - we ended up brushing our teeth in the toilet downstairs.
With the exception of 2 toilet rolls, no provisions at all provided - not even a bar of soap in the bathroom. You have to take EVERYTHING with you or buy it there (thankfully someone had left behind some washing up liquid). This is not what we are used to in supposed 5* accommodation of this kind which cost just under £100 per night.
You have a dishwasher - but no tablets! And not enough plates etc to use a dishwasher anyway.
The front garden is a bit overgrown so every time we opened the gate we got covered in water from the overhanging plants.
Loved the TV's in every room - mostly because it meant we could listen to the radio throughout the house and on the rainy day we stayed home we could watch TV in bed.
The parking spot was good to have but a very tight squeeze (we have a Mazda 6 which just about fitted in but I had to get in the car outside the car park).
Wifi was useful considering that there was no mobile coverage at all on our networks.
Thank you for your feedback. The cottage has been rated by Visit England as 5 star and is therefore advertised as such. In self catering accommodation the provision of the little extras (soap/dishwasher tablets) are at the discretion of each owner and we shall make a recommendation that this is given some attention.

"Perfect Cornish Retreat"
My partner and I love Polperro, but we have never stayed there until now. Strawberry Fields is very close to the centre of Polperro, so we got around on foot. There is an assigned car parking space just a 5 minute walk away, it's a tight fit (both through Polperro and into the car park space itself!) but we barely used the car so didn't mind.
The cottage itself is perfect, owned by a Thai couple so some of the decor has an Eastern flavour, without intruding on the quaint 'Cornishness' of the cottage itself. Lovely living room with huge comfy corner couch, wi-fi, tv, dvd player etc, all the usual things. Kitchen has a utility room with everything you'd ever need. One thing lacking was a lasagna dish, but the restaurant next door (Somewhere Food) lent us one for the evening so all was well! The food at Somewhere is lovely too!
The bedroom has a high ceiling (unusual for a Cornish cottage!) and a ceiling fan, which was a blessing during our stay during the heatwave!
The best feature has to the garden, it's set over two levels, and has a BBQ, dining chairs and table, and then a little summer house that has wonderful views and it's set up onto the hill, so you're away from the street below.
All in all, a perfect little cottage for a couple wishing to explore cornwall, although Polperro itself is so beautiful we rarely left, apart from a visit to Sennan Cove and the Minack Theatre, both wonderful!
We have already booked the cottage again for New Year. Can't wait!
