The West Country / Cornwall region
Talland Bay , a pretty cove is a mile along the coast from Polperro. Its beaches are popular with families and there are a couple of beach cafés.
The popular resort of Looe is about 4 miles from Polperro. Buses run between Polperro and Looe, or you can take a boat there from Polperro harbour. The River Looe divides East and West Looe. East Looe has popular, wide sandy beaches, excellent restaurants and an abundance of pubs and shops.
West Looe has an extensive shingle and rock beach with good rock pools and a great view of Looe Island. There are also tennis courts, a mini golf and a bowling green open to visitors.
Fowey is a lovely old port and historic seafaring town. An attractive place with steep, narrow streets and alleyways that lead down to one of the best natural harbours along the south coast, Fowey has a good range of individual shops, galleries and restaurants, and is connected to Bodinnick by car ferry and to Polruan by foot ferry.
Bodmin Moor is about 13 miles from Polperro. Its beautiful, wild and unspoilt landscape makes it ideal for walkers. It is home to many pretty villages, includion Minions, where you can see the dramatic Cheesewring and the mystical Hurlers stone circle. Here you will also see wild ponies and witness some spectacular sunsets.
The Polperro area
Polperro is probably the prettiest fishing harbour in Cornwall. Winding streets lead down to the picturesque harbour, which was once a haunt of smugglers. Polperro is a historic fishing village, and pretty, colour-washed cottages line the steep valley overlooking the harbour. Attractions include a model village and a smuggling museum.
There are charming pubs, numerous restaurants and plenty of shops to browse. The coast path leads off to Looe, via Talland Bay and spectacular views of Looe Island, or Polruan, where you may catch a ferry over to Fowey. The Polperro Festival is a week-long music festival that takes place each June. Guy Fawkes Night is celebrated with a stunning fireworks display over the harbour, and New Year is very popular, with most people in fancy dress.

After a long drive Richard was waiting for us with a full cream tea - the scones from the local bakery are the best I've tasted and my family are chefs! We were made to feel very welcome and were told about the local area, some places to visit and stunning walks. There were also plenty of guide leaflets in the apartment, and a very handy folder of information including appliance manuals (just in case) bus timetables, and reviews of the local pubs and restaurants. The whole booking was easy and he was incredibly helpful, sending out details of what was in the apartment, a detailed map of how to get there -which i forgot so he patiently talked us there on the mobile, and he even offered to help getting some food in advance of our arrival! He was available on the mobile if we needed him, but otherwise left us to our own devices - the perfect host! The location is great - there is a lovely (albeit steep) walk down to the fishing village, but worth it for the sense that you well deserved your pint/meal and can walk it off a little on the way home. All in all we had a wonderful holiday. Richard even kindly posted my phone charger back to me at home (as I'd seen his text too late late to pop back). Highly recommended. |
