The Mallorca/Majorca region

Few spots on Earth can honestly be described as born vacation destinations, but the island of Mallorca off the coast of Spain is truly a world that exists solely as a space to revel, relax and enjoy life to its fullest. With tropical beaches that are the envy of the rest of Europe, Mallorca is one of the hottest European vacation destinations, and now that the secret is out, Mallorca is becoming one of the best known vacation spots in the world!

Mallorca beaches:

From tiny rocky coves you can only reach by boat or clambering over the mountains to long stretches of brilliant white sand with lively bars and bustling restaurants serving delicious paella.

As you'd expect, Mallorca has a selection of beaches for you discover unlike anywhere else in the world.

Our favourite five beaches in Mallorca

1.Formentor – a long, narrow beach of fine, nearly white sand on the Formentor Peninsula with breathtaking views across the bay and the mountains behind.

2.Puerto de Pollensa – spacious, wide beach which is ideal for children and a great favourite with sailors and windsurfers. Further up the bay towards Alcudia you find an all favorite Kite surfer paradies.

3. Cala San Vincente – the name for the white sand beaches of Cala Barques, Cala Clara and Cala Molins, all with crystal clear water and wonderful views.

4. Playa de Muro – a three kilometre long beach in the centre of the Bay of Alcudia.

5. Es Trenc – probably the single most famous beach in Mallorca and one the last which is truly unspoilt.

POLLENCA, Mallorca

Attractive rural town in Mallorca - in the North-West

At the eastern end of the Serra de Tramuntana and tucked between two hills, each topped by a sacred site, Pollenca is the perfect Mallorcan town. Large enough to avoid being twee but small enough to wander round in a morning, it has none of the feel of other towns which have succumbed under the sheer weight of tourism.

Foreigners have long been attracted here, but Pollenca has learned to accept and adapt to tourism without losing its soul. Cafe life is still the rule; if you want to join in, come on a Sunday morning when the Placa Major is filled with market stalls and the locals congregate after church to relax in the Cafe Espanyol.

PORT DE POLLENCA, Mallorca

Holiday beach resort in Majorca - in the North-West

Puerto Pollenca is one of the most popular family resorts in the whole of Mallorca and offers great activities, beaches, bars and restaurants to the visitors that come here every year.

The horseshoe shaped bay is well protected from strong winds and so the calm, warm water of the Mediterranean sea are ideal for holidays by the beach. The Pine Walk promenade along Passeig Voramar, all whitewashed villas and pine trees leaning into the sea, is perfect for an early evening walk.

The resort of Puerto Pollenca offers lovely sea view apartments over the stunning beachfront Pine Walk as well as all inclusive hotel packages. There are many fincas and villas situated in the back roads of the town including spectacular houses on the hill of Gotmar looking over the town.

Like many Majorcan towns, Puerto Pollenca was originally a fishing village. This North Majorcan town still features a large marina which nowadays harbours leisure boats but you can still see some traditional 'llaüts' used by the Mallorcans for catching fish.

This genteel, old-fashioned resort at the mouth of Pollenca Bay is popular throughout the year. There is also a large community of foreign residents, mostly retired British.

Look out for the bust of Hermen Anglada-Camarasa, the Catalan painter who spent many years in Pollenca and whose work is displayed in the Fundacio la Caixa in Palma. A favourite walk from Port de Pollenca is the 3-km hike across the Formentor peninsula through the Boquer valley, a paradise for ornithologists and lovers of wild flowers.
