The Mallorca/Majorca region
Despite what the noise from places like Magaluf would have one believe, Mallorca is mostly very beautiful and unspolit. It's landscapes are incredibly diverse, ranging from mountains higher than Scotland's highest, to flat salt plains, from green forests to rolling wheat fields. The island also has a stong, defined culture and a fruitful artistic community. And being relatively small, beaches of all types are abundant and all within an hour drive. I am from the UK, have lived in a few different places and worked all over the world and I have now lived here in Mallorca for 6 years, and I still love it.
The Pollensa / Cala Sant Vicenc area
In Pollensa - Calvari. Puig de Maria monestary on 300m hill (there's also a restaurant at the top) Church in square, wonderful interior. The town museum. Dionis Bennassar's Museum (local painter from the turn of the 20th century).
One event most heavily attended by locals is the procession on Good Friday of hundreds of church goers who take a large wooden statue of Christ on the cross down the steps of the town's small church following mass, the parade traveling through the town's streets past hundreds of spectators.
Other, happier parades are also often held in Pollensa, especially during saints' days. Saint Antoni's day and Saint Sebastian's day, both in January, are full of celebrations, feasting and activities.
The area's largest event of the year, however, takes place in late July. Lasting for a whole week, is the reenactment of the battle between Pollensa's residents and their Moorish invaders, which took place over 600 years ago. The festival, which has been held yearly since the 19th Century, features reenactors wearing period costumes, dances, food, plays and a special mass held in honor of the Christian victors.

We stayed at Bon Dia in August this year and had the most wonderful time that we are booking again for next year. The apartment is really clean and very well equipped, the beach is literally 2 minutes walk away and there are some really nice restaurants within close proximity. (we even found a couple more on our last night). The beach, although small is stunningly beautiful and to be honest any other beach that we visited just was not the same. Cala San Vincent is a small quiet place so if you are looking for raging nightlife this is not the place for you. We have a nine and three year old and they absolutely loved it. Roll on next year!
