The Balearic Islands region
There's much more to Mallorca than the beach. Palma de Mallorca (or simply Palma) is the main centre and a charming stop. The northwest coast, dominated by the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, is a beautiful region of olive groves, pine forests and ochre villages, with a spectacularly rugged coastline.
Check out websites like www.illesbalears.es, www.baleares.com, www.abcmallorca.com and www.newsmallorca.com.
The capital, Palma de Mallorca, is on the south side of the island, on a bay famous for its brilliant sunsets.
Locals refer to what lies beyond the capital as the part forana, the 'part outside'. A series of rocky coves and harbours punctuate the short south west coastline. Offshore from the island's westernmost point is the large, uninhabited Illa de Sa Dragonera.
The spectacular Serra de Tramuntana mountain range runs parallel with the northwest coast and Puig Major (1445m) is its highest point. The northeast coast is largely made up of two bays, the Badia de Pollença and the larger Badia d'Alcúdia.
The east coast is an almost continuous string of sandy bays and open beaches, which explains the densely packed tourist developments. Most of the south coast is lined with rocky cliffs interrupted by beaches and coves, and the interior is largely made up of the fertile plain known as Es Pla.
Summers are gorgeous, exactly what you are after for your holiday getaway! Winters are cool and some weeks are wet, so the great plus to this property is that there is central heating to keep the humidity at bay for those winterbreaks. Excellent fiestas to visit in the off season are Sant Antoni on the 17th of January, and the Easter processions.
Although Pollensa has become one of Mallorca's most popular tourist spots, it still appears unspoiled. The town, with its ochre-coloured stone houses and winding lanes is picturesquely sited on the edge of fertile farmland.
Its old town, dating back to the 18th century, is made up of a series of narrow streets and emblematic buildings such as the Calvari steps, the Parish Church, the Cloister of Sant Domingo and the Jesuit School, among others.
There is a lot of art and history involved with the town's history, the tourist information office can guide you in the right direction for museums and other interesting buildings to visit, or just ask us!
There are plenty of walks and cycle routes around the area, great restaurants and the cafes lining the square are definitely a meeting place on lazy summer evenings, as well as on Sundays (market day).
The Good Friday procession from the church at the top of the hill to the church in town. And on any other day of the year, you should climb the 365 steps from the church in town to the church on the hill. Beautiful view from there. The fourteen stations of the Cross can be followed (reverse) on the narrow road going from the hill down to the main city square.
The battle between the Moors and the Christians on the 2nd of August and the bonfires of Sant Antoni on the 17th of January are two further unforgettable fiestas in Pollensa town.
Get a nice cold beer in the main square on market day and sit back and enjoy the view.
Climb to the top of Puig de Maria and have a paella.
Or just walk or run one of the areas several trails, leading to Alcudia, Lluc, Cala Sant Vicenc or nowhere up a hilltop.
Mallorca is great for biking, hiking and adventure sports. The latter can be booked through mondaventura.com, which has offices on Placa Vella and a kayak rental station on the Cala Sant Vicenc main beach in summer months.
Traditional food is being rediscovered in the Balearics which varies from island to island. Pork is a main ingredient. A Pa'mb oli can be had in most local caffés (literally bread with oil, but it's so much more than that!). Arroz negro (black rice, rice with cuttlefish and its ink) is a nice change from a "typical Spanish" paella. Snails and mushrooms have their seasons, and rabbit or lamb or two further typical hearty dishes. Do try the Langosta a la parrilla which partners spiny lobster with local home made mayonnaise. A must have with your breakfast coffee is an ensaimada which is a spiral-shaped yeast bun.
Asking for just "café" gets you a small espresso type cup of coffee. If you want a large black coffee, one asks for a "café Americano". "Café con leche" gets you a white coffee and a "carajillo" makes that espresso somewhat stronger ;-) (shot of liqueur of choice in the coffee).
Mallorca enjoys a typical Mediterranean weather, with mild winters and hot summers. During the months of July and August, the weather is hot and beautifully sunny, boasting around 11 hours of sun daily. During the winter, the weather can get chilly, but in general you can enjoy fine, mild weather on most days and outside lunch is normal.
