The Mallorca/Majorca region
Puerto Pollensa is an attractive resort which stretches along a sheltered horseshoe-shaped bay lined with sandy beaches, set against the backdrop of the Boquer Mountains. The resort has grown up around a scenic fishing port that served the picturesque old Roman town of Pollensa. Far quieter and more laid back than the exuberant resorts of the Bay of Palma, Puerto Pollensa attracts both families and couples. T
he resort's celebrated Pine Walk overlooks the beach and the bay, dotted with the colourful sails of yachts. Some of the best fish restaurants in Mallorca are to be found along the promenade and you will also find a wide range of cuisines to suit every taste. The resort offers all the usual water sports both at the marina and along the beach, and inland there are opportunities for hiking along walking trails in the surrounding hills and scenic mountains.??
Cala San Vicente Puerto Pollensa's near neighbour, is a small resort with some excellent restaurants that nestles around four sandy coves in the shadow of the Formentor Peninsula and is perfect for family holidays. The area is renowned for walking, with dramatic coastal scenery of rocky outcrops that plunge into the sparkling seas, one of which is the Cavall Bernat.??The nearby Formentor Peninsula, the bony northern spur of the Tramuntana Mountains is an area of great natural beauty with wooded valleys, plunging cliffs, magnificent seascapes and a wonderful beach, the Platja de Formentor. Along the road to the top of the Cap there are some spectacular views out to sea and opportunities to observe the many species of birds that nest in the area.??
Alcudia (Old Town) not to be confused with the modern resort 3 kms to the south, has a fascinating and turbulent history. Settled by the Phoenicians and Greeks, the Romans made it their capital, it was destroyed by the Vandals and rebuilt by the Moors, and liberated in the early 1200’s by the Spanish who sensibly fortified the city with massive walls. Today visitors still enter the narrow streets of the old town through one of the two gates, guarded by large towers. Nearby, at Polentia, is a well preserved Roman amphitheatre and the Orator de Santa Anna, one of Mallorca's oldest churches. You will also find a number of enticing restaurants, bars, shops and art galleries in the old centre of Alcudia.??Further afield there are many other places of interest - Lluc, renowned for its statue called La Moreneta, beautiful Deia home to many artists, the ancient hilltop town of Arta; and Palma itself.?? Sports enthusiasts are well catered for in this area. Apart from the wonderful sandy beaches there is a good selection of water sports, ranging from wind surfing to sailing, snorkelling to scuba diving. There are also many land based sporting facilities including two golf course, tennis; and opportunities for cycling, walking and horse riding.
The Pollensa / Font Xica area
Historic Pollensa, situated in the north of Mallorca, lies in the lee of the Tramuntana Mountains and is a peaceful old town that has been largely unaffected by tourism. Pollensa was established a few miles inland to protect against pirate attacks; whilst its harbour, Puerto Pollensa, was left as an unprotected outpost. Today the port has grown into a popular family holiday resort.
Pollensa is one of Mallorca’s most celebrated cultural towns with most of the historic medieval centre remaining intact, particularly around the Plaça Major. The Plaça is also home to a cluster of excellent restaurants, cafes and bars and a great setting for long leisurely lunches or dinners; and a busy weekly market. Just north of the Plaça is the Via Crucis, a long stone stairway comprising 365 steps, up the slope of El Calvario, bordered by ancient cypress trees, at the top of which is a small chapel housing a much-revered statue of Mare de Déu del Peu de la Creu. ??There are a number of interesting places to visit nearby.
