The Mallorca/Majorca region
Situated in Northern Mallorca, Puerto Pollensa sits in a beautiful horseshoe bay and is set against the stunning backdrop of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains.
The large beach in Puerto Pollensa is wide and the sand soft, while the water is clear and shallow, making it perfect for family visitors. It also houses one of Mallorca's leading sailing and surfing schools. The famous Pine Walk around the bay is fringed with friendly bars and a selection of fabulous restaurants. The beautiful setting has inspired many artists and photographers. With an attractive marina Puerto Pollensa is an ideal base for both active and relaxing holidays.
There is no shortage of restaurants in the port. Chinese, Indian, and Italian. But to experience the real Mallorca, you must try Mallorquin cooking - from the simple Pa amb Oli (bread with oil), tasty Coca (a sort of pizza), delicious tumbet (ratatouille with potatoes) to Lechona (roast suckling pig). Most restaurants have a 'fish of the day' special.
In the centre of Puerto Pollensa the square in front of the church hosts a weekly market every Wednesday, where you will find a multitude of stalls selling a vast array of goods which will make shopping an enjoyable experience
Pollensa Old Town is 5 kms inland from Puerto Pollensa and is full of interesting narrow cobbled streets and medieval buildings. There is a famous Sunday market where you can buy local pottery, lace, jewellery, shoes, clothes and fresh vegetables.
One of the most remarkable landmarks in Pollenca is the Calvari Steps, which is a steep climb comprising 365 steps. It is said that, for every step you take, you are forgiven a sin in heaven. This walkway is flanked by cypress trees and is quite impressive in it's own right. At the top stands the 13th century statue of Mare de Deu del Peu de la Creu (Mother of God at the Foot of the Cross) It is well worth the climb to see both the statue and the stunning views of the surrounding countryside and coastlines.
A short distance along the bay from Port de Pollenca you can visit the bustling resort of Alcudia. Alcudia can be divided into three main areas. It has a wide sandy beach which stretches several kilometres with all sorts of amenities. Puerto Alcudia has an attractive marina with many friendly restaurants, and an Old Town dating back to Roman times, which has a market on Tuesdays and Sundays. You can have a memorable shopping experience wandering through the interesting cobbled streets of Alcudia Old Town.
