The Mallorca/Majorca region
Mallorca set in the Mediterranean, off the eastern coast of Spain is the largest of the Balearic Islands and the most varied. For many years Mallorca was synonymous with mass tourism but in recent years it has become a quality destination offering a wide range of holidays. This is an island of variety with all the ingredients for an unforgetable holiday - dramatic mountain scenery, golden sandy beaches, hidden coves, timeless villages and ancient monasteries.
Whilst some areas of the coast have been over developed with exuberant resorts, the capital, Palma, however, still retains some of its historical flavour sporting grand mansions and a magnificent Gothic cathedral in its bustling centre. The north coast still offers some secluded coves below the peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, and several quaint old towns and villages, whilst the interior is largely the preserve of a thriving agricultural community, dotted with windmills, olive and almond trees.
Pollenca/Pollensa area
Historic Pollensa is situated in the hills, in the north of Mallorca, in the lee of the Tramuntana Mountains. It is a peaceful old town that has been largely unaffected by tourism. The town was established a few miles inland to protect against any sudden pirate attacks; its harbour, Puerto Pollensa, was left as an unprotected outpost. Today the 'puerto' has grown into a popular family holiday resort.
Some of Pollensa's historic medieval centre remains around the Plaça Major, the main square, including the church of Nostra Senyora dels Àngels. From the outside the church is fairly austere, the sheer stone façade is pierced only by a large rose window, but the interior is highly decorative particularly during the packed Sunday morning services when it is ablaze with candles. Other than the church, the main square houses a cluster of bars and cafés, and on Sunday morning, a busy market. Just north of the square is the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross), a long stone stairway up the slope of El Calvario, bordered by ancient cypress trees. At the top of El Calvario, in a small chapel, is a much-revered statue of Mare de Déu del Peu de la Creu (Mother of God at the Foot of the Cross). On Good Friday, a figure of Jesus is slowly carried down the steps by torchlight in the Davallament (Lowering).
Pollensa is one of Mallorca’s most celebrated cultural towns and there are a number of interesting places to visit:.
MUSEUM OF POLLENSA – Originally a Dominican convent, built between 1588 and 1616. Established as a museum in 1975. Contemporary and Gothic art, sculpture, ceramics, works donated by Atilio Boveri and paintings from winners of Pollensa’s international painting competition held since 1962. MUSEUM OF MARTÍ VICENÇ – Paintings, sculptures and textiles known as 'roba de llengües' (for curtains, mantel pieces, napkins, etc.) of this prolific local craftsman. This was his original home. HOME MUSEUM DIONIS BENNASSAR – Collection of oils on canvas of this famous local painter (1904-1967). CLOISTER OF SANT DOMINGO’S CONVENT is a building started by the Dominical friars at the end of the 16th century and finished in 1616. Its sober style reflects the architectural conservatism of its time. Today it stages cultural activities such as the Pollensa Music Festival and the Municipal Museum. GOTHIC TOWER rises among the gardens of Joan March as a part of the remains of the house of Marquis Desbrull. An old artillery piece which belonged to the defensive tower of Cala Sant Vicenç (15th century) can be seen here. There is a wonderful collection of local plants displayed in this garden. The ROMAN BRIDGE outside Pollensa, on your left-hand side as you leave the town to drive to Lluc is well worth a visit. EL CASTELL DEL REI (The King’s Castle) is located in a strategic position. It is possibly an Arab construction built on the ruins of an earlier primitive castle. The track crosses the fertile area of Pollensa, with traces of waterwheels, channels, water-mills and the popular fountain of “L’Algaret”. PREHISTORIC CAVES IN CALA SANT VICENÇ. Situated at the public park and historic enclosure of the “Encinares” residential complex, on the right-hand side when driving into the Cala Sant Vicenc. They are funeral caves belonging to the Mediterranean Bronze Age. TALAIA D’ALBERCUIX. This watchtower was built at the end of the 16th century to warn of Moorish landings. It is sited at the beginning of Formentor’s mountain chain at a height of 380 metres (about 1200 feet). It has incredible panoramic views of the whole northern region.
Other places nearby that are worth a visit: PUERTO POLLENSA - this attractive resort stretches along a sheltered horseshoe-shaped bay lined with sandy beaches, set against the backdrop of the Boquer mountain. The resort has grown up around a scenic fishing port that served the picturesque old Roman town of Pollensa. Far quieter and more laid back than the exuberant resorts of the Bay of Palma, Puerto Pollensa attracts both families and couples. The resort's celebrated Pine Walk promenade overlooks the wide sandy beach and the bay, dotted with the colourful sails of yachts. Some of the best fish restaurants on Mallorca are to found along the promenade and you will also find a wide range of cuisines to suit every taste. The resort offers all the usual watersports enjoyed from various operators at the marina and along the beach. Glass bottom boat trips are available from the port. There are also opportunities for hiking along walking trails in the surrounding hills and scenic mountains.
CALA SAN VICENC - Puerto Pollensa's near neighbour is an attractive resort that nestles round 4 sandy coves in the shadow of the Formentor Peninsula and is perfect for family holidays.
ALCUDIA (Old Town) - the ancient town of Alcudia, not to be confused with the modern resort 3km to its south, has a fascinating and turbulent history. The Phoenicians and Greeks settled here and the Romans made it their capital in the 2nd century BC. Destroyed by the Vandals in the 6th century it was rebuilt again by the Moors before being liberated by King Jaime I of Spain in the early 1200s. The Spanish sensibly fortified the city; its massive city walls date from this era. Today visitors still enter the narrow streets of the old town through one of the two gates, which are guarded by large towers. Near the town, at Polentia, is a well preserved Roman amphitheatre and the Orator de Santa Anna, one of Mallorca's oldest churches.
The FORMENTOR PENINSULA - the bony northern most spur of the Serra de Tramuntana, stretches some 20 km north from the Bay of Pollensa and is an area of great natural beauty with wooded valleys, plunging cliffs, magnificent seascapes and a wonderful beach, the Platja de Formentor. Along the road to the lighthouse at the top of the Cap there are some wonderful viewing points with wonderful sea views and many opportunities to view many species of birds that nest in the area.
ARTA - the ancient hilltop town of Arta close to the east coast of Mallorca has been occupied for about 3,000 years. Many visitors come to see the remains of its Bronze Age settlement at Ses Paisses, just outside the town which is set in a grove of olive, carob and holm oak trees. From the Santuari de Sant Salvador, the chapel-shrine on top of the hill, above Arta there is a wonderful view of the town with its bleached rooftops spilling down the hillside below the battlements of a Moorish fortress. The town is particularly lively on Tuesdays, which is market day.
LLUC - to the west of Puerto Pollensa after a wonderful drive through the Serra de Tramuntana you come to the remote mountain village of Lluc. Set in a valley Lluc has been an important place of pilgrimage since the 13th century. Lluc became Mallorca’s most sacred site when a shepherd boy discovered a dark wooden statue of the Virgin in a cleft in the rock. The miraculous statue returned to its cave three times after being placed in the local church. Now the statue, known as La Moreneta, has been encrusted with precious stones and presides in its own chapel, receiving pilgrims and tourists who come to pay homage each day. On Sundays a traditional boys' choir gives a concert at 11am in the monastery where the statue resides.

Further details indoors: The front porch leads into the living room with separate dining area which has an impressive fireplace and dining table seating six. There is a separate lounge area with a bar, satellite television, DVD and CD player. Stairs lead up to a loft area set above the living room which has a fireplace and an additional seating area which leads onto a roof terrace with far reaching views. The kitchen is well-equipped with an electric hob and oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave.
Three of the air-conditioned bedrooms are located on the ground floor. There is a double bedroom with a bathroom en suite (half bath only) and two twin bedrooms which share a separate full bathroom. Across the rear terrace is a new annex comprising a double bedroom which is also air conditioned and sleeps two with an en suite shower and is ideal for perhaps grandparents.
At the rear of the villa the covered terrace has a large wooden table, the perfect setting for long leisurely lunches. On one side of the terrace there is an outside kitchen and laundry room with a washing machine, whilst on the other side there is a built in barbecue and an old oven.
Further details outdoors: The private swimming pool, measures 6 x 4.5 metres, with a depth that ranges from 1.5 down to 2.2 m. is situated at the side of the house amongst the lawns. The pool, with a wooden decking surround, is accessed by both steps and a ladder and has been fenced for security. The gardens are a mixture of lawns, palm trees and colourful flowers and also includes a small children’s playground.

* Between 62 - 42 days of the start of the rental - 50% of the cost of the rental
* Between 41 - 28 days of the start of the rental - 80% of the cost of the rental
* Within 28 days of the start of the rental - 100% of the cost of the rental
For this reason we would strongly urge you to take out comprehensive travel insurance that includes adequate cover in the unlikely event that you have to cancel.
