The Sporades/Evia region

Evia, the second largest island of Greece and the third in the eastern Mediterranean, is located close to the Prefecture of Attica. However, it has a somewhat mainland character, since two bridges - the modern, suspended one and the older, sliding one - link it to mainland Greece, called "Sterea Ellada”.

The prefecture of Evia (which also includes the island of Skiros), is next to the prefecture of Viotia on the east and on the south touches the Aegean Sea, on the north and northwest to the Pagasitiko and Maliako Gulf, while on the west and southwest with the north and south Evian Gulf.

Evia has wonderful beaches, a pleasant climate, renowned monuments, many thermal sources and tasty food and is, therefore, a popular and nearby destination for the inhabitants of Athens. The island extends over a surface of 3,580 km2, its coastline is 48 km long and it has 220,000 inhabitants.

Castelrosso, Karystos

Various findings in several parts of the area (Istiaia, Kirinthos, Psachna, Amarynthos, Artaki, Karistos etc) evidence that Evia was inhabited from the Paleolithic Era. Important archeological finding have been excavated fro the period of copper. Ruins dating back to the Early Helladic period have been found in Lefkanti, Vasiliko and in Manika, Chalkida, while in Oreoi and Aliveri ruins of the Middle Helladic period have been found. Finally, tombs and ruins of post Hellenic and Mycenaean era have been excavated in many areas of Chalkida.

The ancient cities of Evia established important colonies in the Mediterranean sea (Chalkidiki, Asia Minor, Southern Italy), while Eretria was one of the most powerful cities during the Classic period. During the Byzantine era, Evia was very prosperous and formed part of the Department of Greece. During the Ottoman occupation, Evia was under Turkish control even after Kapodistrias' arrival, and it joined to Greece only after the firman of 13th of June 1830.

After the tragedy of Asia Minor in 1922 a lot of refugees installed themselves permanently in Nea Artaki and Nea Lampsakos, as well as in refugee settlements in Chalkida and Amarynthos. During the Second World War, Evia was bombarded by the Germans while the resistance of the locals was very strong.

Politika

Politika village is one of the oldest settlements on Evia. It has an endless picturesque beach

and a variety of restaurants, taverns, cafes and bars by the seafront. There are many shops as

a butcher with only local meat a pharmacy, as many as 4 supermarkets, two bakeries with

fresh baked bread every day of the week. And there is a traditional church on the village

square. There is a doctor's office in the village and a medical center is at 7 km from Politika

in the nearby village of Psachna. Where you can also find a lot of shops, banks, big

supermarkets, a post office and weekly street markets.

In Chalkida , the biggest town in Evia which is 18 km from Politika you find everything

there is to find in a big city, like hospitals, banks and big department stores. There is a big

boulevard with cafeterias' and restaurants where you can get a taste and enjoy the famous

Greek nightlife.

Politika is considered one of the most interesting villages, as it possesses not only natural

beauty but also all comforts, from traditional small taverns with home-made mezes to cafebars

right on the edge of the waves, where you can enjoy your drink under the moonlight.

The beach of Politika has small stones

and sand and is famous for its sparkling

clear seawater.

There are beach chairs and umbrellas

available as long as you order something

to drink from the nearby cafeterias.

There are many restaurants on walking distance from the beach.

Places to visit with nice beaches

In the surrounding villages you find beautiful beaches and beach clubs with swimming pools.

At about 10 minutes by car you will find a picturesque village

named Dafni with a famous restaurant on top of a beach

where you can swim and enjoy the sunset. This a perfect place

for snorkeling and swimming, since the bay is surrounded by

mountains

There are steps from the restaurant to the beach but you

have to bring your own chairs and umbrella. The beach has

big stones and fantastic water. A fishing boat brings fresh

fish every day at the restaurant. The restaurant has fish and

meat from the grill and is famous for their cheese pies.

In Alikes there is a beautiful all white sandy

beach with very shallow water, perfect for

small children. Several beach clubs are

situated there with bars and restaurants,

which serve you drinks and food while you

are sunbathing in their luxurious beach

chairs.

Alikes is about 23 km from Politika and will

take you approx. 30 minutes by car. In order

to go there you have to pass the old bridge of Chalkida and follow the signs of Alikes

This beach is situated right across of Politika, if you have a fast speedboat, you will be there

in about ten minutes. There are all kinds of water sports like water skiing, pulling devices,

sailing etc.

A nice day trip is to go to Xiliadou , which you find on the road to Chalkida, after about 30

min, you make a left from the main road and follow the

sign Steni. This road will bring you to a natural river

and a small waterfall, where you can eat fresh Pestrofa

(Trout) at a restaurant right next to the river. After, you

can continue the road to Xiliadou for another 40 min.

with its beautiful sandy beaches and big rocks. There

are some nice restaurants and cafeterias at the beach as

well as some hotels.

This is a natural beach with nice waves when

there is wind but you have to bring your own

chairs and umbrella.

"Understated luxury and beauty"

Stayed in this beautifully secluded Greek house for a week. The location is perfect for easy access and proxility to Athens (only 2 hrs by car), and still you are on an island (Evia) and close to the beach. The village of Politika is still pure and untouched by real estate developers or rich foreigners, and Haldiki is close enough to visit a town when you need to.
The house is very stylish, well-appointed and comfortable, with ample space for 8 people, and sits on a hill overlooking Politika and the sea...beautiful sunsets.
Year round relax, good food and seclusion guaranteed; not a place for the party crowd.
