The Paphos District

The city of Pafos, still usually written as Paphos, on the southwest coast of the island, is, according to legend the birthplace of the Greek Goddess of Love, Aphrodite. It became the capital of the island replacing Salamis during the Hellenistic Period as its masters, the Ptolemy's, favored a location closer to their capital, Alexandria.

Paphos consists of two areas: the coastal resort area (Kato Paphos) and the town itself (Pano Paphos) which is slightly inland. Paphos is very popular with tourists. Among its attractions are its ancient mosaic floors, its beautiful old harbor, its modern hotels and restaurants, situated along the seaside promenade. Other sights include an archeological museum, the Byzantine castle of Paphos, the Tombs of the Kings, St. Paul's Pillar and the Temple of Aphrodite (the goddess of love and beauty).

The city and district of Pafos (Paphos) had remained the most underdeveloped part of the island until 1974.
The Turkish invasion and occupation of the major tourist resorts of Keryneia and Ammochostos led to major investments by the government and the private sector in the district of Pafos (Paphos). There was rapid economic activity in all fields but especially tourism and the district's population stopped shrinking and indeed showed some signs of increasing. Today Pafos (Paphos) is a popular sea resort with a population of 39.500.

Polis / Argaka area

Argaka is a traditional farming coastal village situated approximately 8km from Polis town. There are two parts to the village. The modern part lies along the coastal front, where a selection of supermarkets and tavernas can be found. The older section is located on the mountain slopes with traditional style housing made from limestone and igneous stones. Argaka is an ideal location for lovers of nature and is a region of natural beauty.

Argaka village offers a great base for nature lovers and a relaxing country side environment. This village is notorious for its delightful little restaurants along the beach front. The small farming village of Argaka lies on the foot of the Paphos forest, with a pretty church and a few local tavernas. It is notorious for its delightful little restaurants along the beachfront. The ground here is extremely fertile so there is an abundance of fruit trees including figs, pears, apples and oranges
