The Paphos District

PAPHOS
Paphos, Cyprus, is in the Western district of the island and is blessed with an average of 330 days of sunshine a year. The geographical diversity of the region, ranging from the coast, with soft sandy beaches, picturesque inlets and coves, to the hills and woodland of the Paphos Forest, lends itself to visitors of many interests. Walking, cycling, sunbathing, golf, deep water fishing, bird watching or nature photography and a range of water sports are all available in Paphos, gaining the region a place on the UNESCO list of Cultural and Natural Treasures.
Paphos Town (Pafos Town) is the capital of the region, and the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite – the Greek Goddess of Love, and proves a popular destination for tourists.
Paphos Town’s turbulent past gives it a wealth of historic places of interest to visit, including the Byzantine Castle of Paphos, the Tombs of the Kings, and the remains of the Roman Governor’s Palace with its fine mosaics, or the remains of the Temple of Aphrodite.

Polis / Peristerona area

POLIS
Polis is located North West of the region of Pafos at a 30 minute distance from the town of Pafos and 40 minutes from Pafos airport.

Polis is the perfect holiday location for those who appreciate greek authenticity, and who are seeking rest and tranquility in beautiful surroundings. Ideal for those who enjoy great alfresco dining with good food and wine, friendly people and a host of beach and countryside pursuits. Terrain is a blend of mountains, sea and plain with a wonderfully healthy climate, mild winters, and warm clear seas with sandy beaches.
Polis is considered as the location par excellence for nature lovers and those keen on active holidays, such as hiking, cycling, horse riding and golf. The Tsada Golf Course is just 25 minutes away from Polis

Polis offers all the facilities required for a pleasant vacation: a tourist office, banks, a hospital, pharmacies, shops, restaurants, taverns, bars, cafes and a picturesque pedestrian's area in the traditional heart of Polis, a local meeting point throughout the year from early hours till late at night. Furthermore, the region boasts an excellent archaeological museum, Byzantine churches and traditional houses.

Polis is served by the picturesque fishing port of Latsi (Latchi) ; a pole of attraction all the year round and reputed for its fish taverns, its sea-sport facilities and boat-trips up to the Akamas (a must for all Polis visitors).
Polis is also only a few minutes drive from the beautiful Akamas peninsula, a nature reserve area destined to become a National Park.
Α walk along its nature trails accompanied by the panoramic view of the bay of Polis is a unique experience.

Both Polis and Latchi boast Blue Flag beaches, toilet facilties and wheelchair access.

The Polis region has the highest number of repeat guests in Cyprus.

PERISTERONA – Near POLIS
Peristerona is a traditional Cypriot village located just 10 minutes drive from the seaside town of Polis Chrysochous and a 40 minutes drive from Pafos and Pafos International Airport.

This picturesque mountain village is famous for its efforts to maintain the beauty and the traditions of Cyprus. The Community leader (in Cyprus called the Muchtar) and the council are putting a lot of energy in improving the local environment, encouraging people to renovate their stone houses and so keeping the traditional Cyprus village culture and atmosphere. They actively encourage all new buildings in Peristerona to be made of local stone. Great efforts are made to keep the village alive and much encouragement is given to Peristeronians abroad to spend their retirement years back in their home village.
Peristerona was rewarded by the Bishopric of Pafos by building the Bishops palace here.

Peristerona derives its name from the word peristeri - meaning pigeons. Years ago there were thousands of pigeons living in the nearby so-called "Gorge of the Eagles" which is particularly loved for being so photogenic.

By tradition roads up to the village are planted with local trees and flowering shrubs to add to the green feel of the area. Many of the locals work for the Cyprus Forestry Department and indeed the Pafos regional Forest Chief comes from the village.
The surrounding countryside is also very picturesque and is an extremely romantic place.
At approximately 300 meters above sea level the soft undulating hills are covered with vines, olive trees, wild flowers, herbs and fruit trees. Most locations offer views to the sea and the Akamas Peninsula or to the Evretou dam.
It is highly recommended to take the old road from Peristerona to Lysos village and then down to Pelathousa and on to Polis -the drive is absolutely beautiful.
The village has a perfect climate for the local delicacy of wild mushrooms which are very much sought after. Try asking a local to take you on a mushroom picking day out. It is an unforgettable experience (December to April).
The local church is dedicated to St Mamas and is, like most village churches in Cyprus, located in the centre of the village. The church is nowadays part of the Bishopric of Arsinoe. The local Bishops palace is a magnificent building, housing an interesting Byzantine museum.
The museum has an impressive collection of icons, metalwork art, characteristic Cyprus embroideries and woodcarvings. The museum is open daily.
The area of Peristerona is home to 4 other churches, which are small but very old. They are dedicated to St. Theodoros, St George, St Zoni and The Holy Fathers.

There is a local supermarket which sells almost everything you could need (Helen's) and is still culturally very Greek. (Some folks still take their shopping home on a Donkey)

The Peristerona area, which is rich in natural beauty, has a wonderful climate and has a traditional Cypriot atmosphere and architecture.
