The Paphos region
The legendary birthplace of Aphrodite, Cyprus is a beautiful island bathed in luminous sunshine where glittering Mediterranean waters lap golden shores...
Mark Anthony was into grand gestures, so much so that he gave Cyprus to Cleopatra as a token of his love. And he couldn’t have picked a more fitting gift. This sun-drenched island is like a glittering treasure trove spilling over with gems. You want sun-soaked beaches? No problem. You want scenery? Easy - the island has everything from the majestic peaks of the Troodos mountains to pine-cloaked slopes cut with cascading, ice-cold streams. History? Simple. We're talking forts, castles, tombs, churches, the lot. Stand in the middle of the ancient theatre at Kourion and you can almost hear the roars of the crowds as a gladiator takes his last breath. Or take a trip into the mountain-top monastery, Kykkos, and stand before the famous icon, Elousa, said to have been painted by St Luke the Evangelist. Don't look directly at it though - so holy is the icon, legend has it anyone who attempts to gaze upon it will be instantly blinded.
The west coast of Cyprus is the place to head if you're looking for traditional charm, laid-back living and an architectural heritage that'll leave you spellbound. Paphos, where you'll fly into, is arguably the most popular resort on this side of Cyprus, one of those rare places that has managed to strike the right balance between old and new. On the one hand you've got old forts, underground churches and crumbling theatres, on the other there's sleek shops, colourful cafés and tempting restaurants. Further East is lively Limassol, famous for being the place where Richard the Lion Heart was shipwrecked. Take a trip to the castle where he married his sweetheart or wander round the ruins of Amathous.
Just 2km from the renowned traditional town of Polis with its quaint village square surrounded by stone tavernas and cafe’s oozing tradition. 4km to the fishing village of Latchi harbour with its many restaurants and golden sandy beach. Once a sleepy fishing harbour, Latchi is an attractive and lively tourist resort with water sport, boat hire and diving possibilities. Nearby Akamas park offers many marked walking trails with stunning hill and coastal paths and trails with exceptional views.
Nearest airport is Paphos International. Driving distance is 45km or about 1 hour. Car hire or use of a car is recommended.
Local town Polis (2km) with local Cypriot produce and international shops and services. New large Papantoniou and Orphanides supermarkets stocks full range of Local and European foods, beverages. 35km from Troodos Mountain villages of Stavros and 40km from Kykkos Monastery. 35km (30 minutes) from Paphos, 8km from Akamas wilderness.
Local fishing and leisure port Latchi (4km) for many restaurants, leisure, boat hire, diving, fishing, kite-surfing. Aphrodites Baths (8km) where legend says Aphrodite bathed in secluded freshwater pool. Stunning coastal views along coastal road to Pomos (15km). Major town Paphos (35km) with antiquities, harbour, hotels, restaurants, international stores and shops.
