The Poitou-Charentes region
This is the ideal base to explore the towns and cities of the Charente/Dordogne region. Cognac and the wine regions of Bordeaux and Bergerac are within in easy reach as is the bastide town of Monpazier and many famous Chateaux including Monbazillac (famous for it's dessert wine). A little further afield is Sarlat, one of the most popular and picturesque towns in France. In about 1 hr 20mins you can be visiting the many seaside towns along the Atlantic coast.
As we are down in the South-West of France, the sun is much higher in the sky all year round. We get lots of sunshine throughout the year with just enough rain to keep it green and pleasant. Spring comes early and temperatures can be in the 20's from March onwards. Summer is warm but as we are on the top of a hill there is often a breeze to keep things fresh. Autumn can stay warm in the day, but has cooler nights.
Even in winter when the sun is out it's possible to sit outside in the middle of the day and enjoy a glass of St Emillion.
The village of Bonnes is within easy walking distance of the cottage (a 5 minute walk). Bonnes has a good boulangerie where you can get freshly baked bread, croissants etc. The village has two restaurants, Le Sud, the closest country restaurant (simple local food) and a pizzeria.
There are many quaint old villages in the region but the highlight is Aubeterre-sur-Dronne. It is worth taking time to explore the village with it's cafes and restaurants in the main square and the amazing subterranean monolithic church. Wandering the streets you can discover antique shops, potteries and some fine old houses.
Local activities include, golf (there is a set of golf clubs in the shed if you wish to borrow them), horse riding , river-swimming, canoeing and tennis and a high rope course all within 5 - 10 minutes from the cottage, plus some lovely country and riverside walks all on your doorstep. Bike hire with free delivery to and collection from the cottage is available, please ask for details. As well as the local river-swimming there is an outdoor water park at Parcoul (with water slide), a lakeside beach at Lac Jemaye and large indoor pool complexes at Angeloueme and Jonzac,
There are supermarkets at nearby St Aulaye, Chalais and Riberac.
St Aulaye, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, Chalais,Riberac and Brantome have regular markets where you can buy local produce.
