The Guadeloupe region
Such a butterfly the trade winds would have brought there. Between the Atlantic ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Guadaloupe spreads its wings of a thousand tones. A thousand colours, a thousand scents, a thousand tastes, a multitude of landscapes. Superb beaches, all different according to where you are. The sand fades to every shade: black in Basse Terre, white in Grande Terre. Its coasts are also all varied: hemmed in by pretty coves on the Côte sous le Vent in Basse Terre, and wild and abrupt with cliffs on the Côte au Vent in Grande Terre. The Guadaloupe coast offers superb marine depths, as rich in colour and contrasts as its landscapes. Just like the exuberance of the tropical forest which never loses its leaves and buries a string of waterfalls and soft water pools in the freshness of its greenery...Karukéra « the Island of beautiful waters »: that's Guadeloupe ! To tour it, the traveller must be as curious, passionate and patient as a butterfly hunter
The Guadaloupe archipelago comprises seven islands: Marie-Galante, Les Saintes, Saint Martin, Saint Barthélémy, La Désirade and the two main islands: Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre. Grande-Terre (585 km2) is a chalky plateau bordered by splendid white sand beaches. Basse-Terre (943 km2), volcanic and mountainous, is dominated by the Old Lady: La Soufrière which reaches 1,467m. These two islands are separated by the "rivière salée", a sound in which the mangrove alone provides an unusual landscape with its mangroves and fauna. Grande Terre ‘The butterfly's right wing’, is dominated by white, ochre, yellow and pale green, turquoise and blue.. (Surface area: 583 Km2- Coastal length: 260 Km). It is the economic heart of Guadaloupe since industry and services are centralised in Pointe à Pitre and its surroundings. Tourism is ensured by the towns of Saint François, Sainte Anne and Le Gosier. Grande Terre benefits from a much drier microclimate than Basse-Terre. The vegetation there is less dense and shorter, and is less mountainous than the other. Here there are white sandy beaches under the shade of the coconut trees. Still water lagoons, cliffs, dreary greens. .. You find there numerous islets: Ilet à Cochon, ilet du Gosier, ilet Duberreau (near Vieux-Bourg), Ilet Fajou and Petite-Terre. Basse-Terre island is the « Guadaloupe butterfly's » left wing. This wing's colour is green, emerald and blue... , (Surface area: 848 Km2 Coastal length: 180 Km). The island also corresponds to the French arrondissement of the same name: the Basse-Terre arrondissement which has the town of Basse-Terre as its administrative centre. The centre of the island is mountainous and is where you find one of France's national parks: the National Park of Guadaloupe. Its surface area is 848 km², and it has the Soufrière volcano on its terrain.
Pointe-Noire area
At the heart of the Côte sous le Vent, backing onto the mountain and facing the sea, Pointe Noire is a small village with a pleasant atmosphere and numerous curiosities. The village of Pointe Noire owes its name to the chain of bluish black granite volcanic rocks which raised the northern point of the village by falling into the sea. Specialised in woodwork since the XVIII century with the settlement of marine carpenters and long sawyers, Pointe Noire is a very peaceful market town, with a long main street running through it bordered with businesses and wooden Creole houses. Here, time seems to pass more slowly and encourages nonchalance. You have to remember that until the Traversée road was cut (in 1967) which crossed over the mountain through the Deux Mamelles pass, Pointe Noire was a heavily withdrawn village and getting between Pointe à Pitre was a long, fastidious journey. From then on, the village was no more than half an hour from the economic heart of the Island. This opening considerably revitalized its tourist trade in which it prides itself on several sites of interest for visitors where it relives the region's the economic and cultural past. La Maison du bois where miscellaneous wood species from the islands and the creations they allow are presented; La Maison du Cacao where you discover the whole process, from the beating to transforming the beans L’écloserie de ouassous La Caféière Beauséjour is a former restored coffee plant, a gourmet restaurant, a tree filled park with an exceptional view, all the ingredients for a visit not to be missed; La Casa Vanille offers the intoxicating charms of this orchid which was at the heart of the Côte sous le Vent's economy for a long time; On the sea side, along the road which snakes alongside the sea, numerous beaches invite you to bathe, such as the Caribbean beach, which also offers you the curiosities of its Musée du coquillage (Shell Museum). Le Parc aux orchidées is a mysterious garden of some 4000 m2 where 2000 varieties of the entire world's orchids grow in the open air under the eyes and care of the owner, passionate orchidophile: Jean-Claude Rancé. On the mountain side, in addition to the numerous hiking possibilities in this luxuriant tropical forest universe, the visit to Saut d’Acomat is particularly recommended. It is a lovely lake ideal for bathing in and deepened by a beautiful waterfall
