The Lazio region
Latium, the cradle of Rome, consisted originally of the coastal plain from the mouth of the Tiber to the Circeian promontory, and its adjacent foothills.
Its area constituted a part of the much larger modern Italian Regione of Lazio, also called Latium in Latin, and occasionally in modern English. The ancient language of the region was to become the basis of Latin. Latium has played an important role in history owing to its status as the cradle of the Roman Empire and the city of Rome. Consequently, it is home to celebrated works of art and architecture.
Bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea, Latium's capital Rome (Roma) and the sovereign Vatican State, account for the region's, and indeed country's, largest number of visitors—lured by the staggering number of attractions within each. But outside of Rome's famous Colosseum and the Vatican's Sistine Chapel, Latium (Lazio) provides many attractions worth the wander from these busy centres.
Poggio Mirteto / Sabina area
It is difficult to believe that only an hour north of Rome there lies some of the most unspoilt country in Italy. The Sabine Hills are an ancient landscape, more wooded now than they were in Roman times, yet recognizable to the countrymen and women of that era, whose cattle, the same horned light-coated breed, graze the hills today.
Around the edge of the hills rise an extraordinary richness of medieval building. The period between the 9th and 13th centuries were unsettled, particularly in this region, the borderlands between the Papal and Longobard hegemonies.
So, under the direction of the Abbot of Farfa the villages – Contigliano, Cottanello, Casperia, Mompeo, Salisano, Castelnuovo di Farfa, were built as fortified settlements, not with walls, but with the houses of the farmers providing successive protective rings.
