The Tuscany / Siena Province region
Tuscany is a region of central Italy, is crossed by the Apennines, and is characterized by a picturesque landscape of hills, fields, castles and medieval villages. Tuscany also has a coastline with long sandy beaches, overlooked by a reputed like Viareggio.
Tuscany is a splendid example of symbiosis between art, culture, history as well as the beauty of its landscapes.Contains treasures of every age and style, from the Etruscan theatre and Roman baths at Fiesole, to the majestic Gothic buildings in the medieval town of Siena, to the exceptional art and architecture of Florence.
Cities such as Florence, Siena, Lucca, Pisa near towns such as Pienza, Cortona,Montalcino,Certaldo, San Gimignano and Volterra, have the ability to attract many tourists every year. To these were joined by the famous spas of Chianciano Terme, Montecatini Terme, Rapolano Terme, Bagno Vignoni and Bagni di Lucca.
In Tuscany there is a great wine production, there are produced many wines with denomination of origin including the famous Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti, Nobile di Montepulciano,Morellino di Scansano and Brunello di Montalcino)
The Poggibonsi area
Poggibonsi is an authentic town which deserves a visit. Its old pedestrian centre, with its shopping street called Via della Repubblica or amicably called Via Maestra. This is the area where you should aim to go around 5pm onwards for an evening stroll and aperitif at the bars. Best time to go is from 7 pm to 8,30 pm. After this you may ought to try some delicious Tuscan cooking at one of the restaurants that are in the center and around. Shopping is probably best to do it in the mornings when it is quieter. You can easily park at the train station for 50cent/hour (please park only within the blue lines to avoid a fine).
Poggibonsi is a large twon that grew fast in the seventies from which (unfortunately) inherited its architectural style.
Poggibonsi boasts an imposing fortress, the Fortezza Medicea as it was part of the Florentines for a while. The fortress is now mainly used for special venues and provides a fantastic spot to admire the valley around.
From Poggibonsi, you can easily reach the villages in the Chianti Classico or the Chianti Colli Fiorentini area bu simply following one of my suggested routes further on this folder under the Best Drives.
Two of the most beautiful in the area are the ancient cities of San Gimignano and Volterra (which can be reached on a panoramic road across San Gimignano). On the way, try to include a drive and visit to the pretty village of Casole d'Elsa, where the scenery is enchanting. Do not be put off by the large factories you will encounter every now and again as you get clore to Casole. The area was not born to attract tourists and the local economy relies on them. Not far from Casole d'Elsa and Monteriggioni it is worth a visit to the stunning roofless abbey of San Galgano.
FESTIVAL IN THE AREA
SAN GIMIGNANO - second half of July - "Ferie della messi" Medival Festival
CERTALDO - MERCANTIA - mid-July an international festival of street theater
MONTERIGGIONI - first half of July, medieval festival
