This area, about 60 km long and about 3 km wide, is bounded by the sea on one side, and the by hinterland mountain called Biokovo on the other. The backbone of this belt forms the city of Makarska and a number of settlements. Northwest of Makarska are : Brela, Baska Voda, Promajna, Bratus and Krvavica. Southeast are : Tucepi, Podgora, Drasnice, Igrane, Zivogosce, Blato, Drvenik, Zaostrog, Gradac, Brist and Podaca.
The main industry on the Makarska Riviera is tourism which became very important between the two World wars. Makarska Riviera is an area of multiple adventures that are just waiting to be discovered.
MAKARSKA lies at the foot of Biokovo, in a natural harbour closed by the Osejava promontory from the south-east, and by St. Petar peninsula on the north-west. Makarska is an economic, cultural and tourist centre of the Makarska Littoral. There is ferry landing pier for the destination Sumartin on Bra? island in the port. It consists of the old core of the Mediterranean type and a newer part with hotels, restaurants, shops, etc. It has a beautiful 1500 m long beach in a pine wood and numerous sandy coves. It developed from Makar, a settlement at the foot of Biokovo which was mentioned as Muccurum in the documents of the council in ancient Salona of 4th May, 533. At the foothill of Biokovo, as protectors of Makarska, the villages Veliko Brdo, Puharici, Makar and Kotišina are situated, with a Biokovo botanical garden in the latter. Those places have kept the beauty of original popular architecture, so that they are attractive excursion targets today.
BIOKOVO MOUNTAIN - Biokovo mountain stretches throughout the whole Makarska riviera and forms a beautiful and gigantic background for it - Mediterranean phenomenon; if you are lucky with the weather, from the top of the Biokvo (1762 m) you can see Italy as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina! Standing on the 2nd highest peak of Croatia you will see three countries... Why to go there? the view is spectacular; variety of Mediterranean vegetation, remnants of ancient stone made houses, prehistorical burial grounds called "Gomilas“ etc. Easily accessible by bicycles.
ISLANDS OF BRAC AND HVAR:
BRAC: 12 km westward in the town of Makarska are the ferry lines to island of BRA? /famous after (1) the stone; the white limestone columns of the White House are made from the Brac white limestone; Diocletian's Palace in Split and the Canadian National Vimy Memorial; (2) cheese; (3) remnants of early Christian churches; (4) unique BLACA hermitage /UNESCO World Heritage Site/; (5) DRAGON'S CAVE).
HVAR island. To reach HVAR, there are ferry lines from DRVENIK, 20 kms eastward. HVAR is a famous ancient Greek colony, its known for the fields of aromatic lavender, first public theater in Europe /built in 1612/, and a mass number of archeological/historical sites.
KORCULA island with it's major city Korcula. To reach it, you can use Adriatic coast, driving through Peninsula Peljesac, and then 10 mins boat drive, or ferry from Drvenik, 20 km eastward from Podgora. It is said that MARCO POLO was born in the town of Korcula; the house he was born is turned into small museum. Korcula island also has a long history, and was an ancient Greek colony just like Hvar. As a matter of fact, both the island's names derive from Greek words, Pharos /Hvar/, and Korkyra /Korcula/.
STON - 90 km from Drasnice on the way to Dubrovnik or Korcula; famous after the 2nd highest defense walls in the world. Worth seeing it!!!
DUBROVNIK - is one of the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. The whole ancient core of the town is stone made, with it's huge massive defense walls. 150 kms from Podgora.
SPLIT – 70 kms – ancient city, famous after its Diocletian's palace /4th century/, the only Roman palace well preserved in the World. The palace is story for itself. The people are still living within its walls; the major part of life is happening there... It is the pure center of the city; you can see the Jupiter's temple /turned into Christian church/, as well as Diokletian's mausoleum /turned into Christian cathedral – the oldest cathedral in the world by the time the building was built – before the Christianity was officially allowed in Roman empire!!!/
SALONA – 75 kms – remnants of Roman city with amphitheater, churches, sarcophagus es....
TROGIR – 90 kms – another city built on the ancient Greek colony. Marvelous stone built city core with 13th century cathedral, famous after its carvings.
Podgora(population 1500) is situated 7 km south-east of Makarska. Its residents are engaged in agriculture (grapes, olives, figs), seafaring, fishing and tourism. It consists of older hamlets on slopes of Biokovo, which are weakly populated today, and the newer part next to the sea. The monumental statue Seagull's Wings, raised in 1962, overlooks the port from the elevation above it. Podgora has two small ports: one in the former old "porto", and the in ?aklje.
Long tourist tradition reflects in the numerous luxurious hotels and private apartments, numerous restaurants and taverns .
Recreational facilities include numerous sports grounds. There are sailing, diving, windsurfing and water skiing. In tourist season are organized many cultural and entertainment events, theater performances, folk groups and Fishermen's evenings. Particularly interesting is the largest festival in Podgora, the celebration of St.. Vicenza's patron.
