Tucked right on the water's edge in the heart of Turnchapel, this beautifully refurbished, detached cottage, a former pilot boat house, has outstanding and ever-changing views across bustling Plymouth harbour towards the city from almost every room. To one side, a level lawn and parking area (very steep, narrow access) and, to the front, a very private decked area on the water (table/chairs), wonderful for alfresco meals. One step from the decked area through French windows to kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, fridge-freezer, gas hob/oven). From the kitchen, hall to double bedroom (5' bed) with doors to decking, views and en suite shower-room (suite). Family bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). Stairs from the dining area up to living room with TV/DVD, beams to apex, 19th cent. warship's burner (open fire) and sliding doors to balcony with those views. Two more bedrooms – a double with sliding doors to private balcony, and a small twin (limited clothes-storage space) with original ship's cabin beds; very smart shower-room (suite). Wireless music system. A stunning, contemporary nautical home in a wonderful waterside location.

The West Country region

The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.

Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.

Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.

Plymouth

Turnchapel: historic fishing village (two good food pubs) right by the water, where the river Plym meets Plymouth Sound and on the cusp of Plymouth (theatre, cinema, café bars, art deco lido) and South Hams beaches. Mount Batten peninsula (watersports, marina), ½ mile. Golf (spectacular views), 1½ miles. Bovisand (sandy beach), 2½ miles.

Thank you very much for providing feedback on Drift Cottage. I'm glad to hear that you had such a wonderful holiday. We agree that the ferry to Plymouth is a great way to travel, and particularly recommend the Barbican and the Royal William Yard.
