The West Country region

Weather permitting, as always, this is a city that you can walk around with ease.

Plymouth Hoe, referred to locally as the Hoe, is a large south facing open public

space. The Hoe is above the low limestone cliffs that form the seafront and it

commands magnificent views of Plymouth Sound, Drake's Island, and across the

Hamoaze to Mount Edgecumbe in Cornwall.

The Barbican is the name now given to the western and northern sides of the old

harbour area of Plymouth.

Dartmoor National Park is about 45 minutes to the North and East of Plymouth,

with over 450 miles of footpaths and bridleways, it is great place to explore.

During the day, there are plenty of pubs, restaurants, sea view cafes and bars

around Plymouth to keep you fed and watered. Many are located in the Barbican

area. At night, from Indian to Thai, Plymouth has it all – no matter what your taste.

Pub food is generally of a high standard as well and served up until 9.30 during high

Drake Circus shopping centre

The City Museum and Art Gallery on Tavistock Place, just north of Drake Circus,

combines an amazing natural history collection, fossils, rocks, insects etc. with

Cornish art, some lovely old masters, plus archaeological finds from Dartmoor

mostly Bronze age. The Plymouth Arts

Centre is located at the Barbican, and

displays a wide range of local and

international artists, plus limited

release foreign films, exhibitions,

concerts and out of the ordinary displays.

The National Marine Aquarium was the first aquarium in the United Kingdom to be

set up solely for the purpose of education, conservation and research. It remains

one of Britain's foremost aquariums

"good location, clean, big, but had issues."

I have rated this a 3 because we would not stay here again. The apartment was clean, large and well equipped (had all the things needed except glasses and the sofa is useless). It is very close to all the shops too. But there where problems. The parking is ridiculous. Although the letting agent did respond to my calls to arrange permits, it took all week to get the right ones and we where not advised on the parking rules. We had to change plans to make sure we could park when we got home. Having looked into it, restrictions and fines are very high in Plymouth so you need to be very careful. It is also not stated when booking that you will be charged £2 each for these (we argues this point, so did not pay). The apartment in slap bang in the student section, so we had very loud music being played from 6pm-11pm each night. Plus the walls are thin, so you can hear all from the 4 flats around you. There's nothing wrong with the apartment itself i guess, but for the price it was not worth the noise and hassle.
