L630 - Creek House
Cottage | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 8
¼ mile from the shops in Newton Ferrers, a detached, south-facing family house called Creek House, with stunning views over the estuary towards the Pool and Nat. Trust woodland. The garden slopes to the river in terraces, partly lawned with seating area, barbecue, small pond and colourful borders. At its foot are a private quay (low tide shore access) with outhaul mooring, perfect for lazy summer evenings and crabbing, and footpath leading to shops/pubs.
Steps (38) from the road lead to the house, past a detached self-contained studio for two, Little Creek (L631), which can be booked with Creek House or separately.
Creek House is full of light: big windows, high ceilings, very comfortable, lots of space and fine views from most rooms. Good-sized hall (table football), off which lovely living/dining room (26' x 18') – a fine room stretching the width of the house, with open fire and deep bay window (seat) with lovely views across the river and downstream. Glass doors lead to suntrap conservatory with French windows to terrace (table/chairs, barbecue) and superb views across the river. Glazed doors into snug with TV/DVD/video, children's games… and the view! Across the hall, towards the back of the house, a breakfast room with table/chairs and TV. An archway leads to well-equipped kitchen with dishwasher, fridge-freezer, gas hob/eye-level oven/grill, microwave, island unit and hatch to living/dining room. Back door to enclosed back courtyard. Utility room with washing machine, tumble drier and space for a dog. Downstairs loo (washbasin).
Stairs from the hall up to large landing and four bedrooms – the master double (5' bed) with dressing area and en suite shower-room (suite); a twin looking upstream; at the back, a double (5' bed) with en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower), door to garden and lovely views downstream; a small room with a single bed plus pull-out truckle bed (limited clothes-hanging space); and large family bathroom (suite plus hand-shower and separate shower). Also off the landing, small study area – ideal for quiet moments – leading through glazed doors to 30' balcony (patio furniture) with the best views of all.
A lovely house - spacious with many different areas to enjoy and, of course, those wonderful views. Pets permitted in utility room only. Damages Deposit £200.

The West Country region
The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.
Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.
Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.
Newton Ferrers/Noss Mayo: adjoining small villages beside the lake-like river Yealm estuary, sheltered by oak-wooded hillsides, popular for sailing, lovely for walking or just sitting. Essential shops (Newton Ferrers) and good food pubs. Low tide footpath across the creek. Tennis courts; riding stables. Pedestrian ferry to coast walk to Wembury, and secluded beach. Mothecombe (nearest sandy beach by car), 4 miles. Plymouth, 11.
