The countryside is green and gently rolling with many tracks and lanes to explore on foot or bicycle. The climate is warm and mild, similar to that of the Channel Islands. It is an ancient land with its' own language and strong traditions. At Kerdeven we are close to the Route Touristique des Pierres. These are large standing stones set in an enormous circle around Brittany and having a similar sort of age to Stonehenge. The Nantes/Brest canal is nearby. This was built at the behest of Bonaparte by labourers from local prisons in a bid to get supplies to his troops without running the gauntlet of the British Fleet. The beautiful Lac de Guerledan is about the size of Windermere and only a short drive away. The area is very popular with cycling teams who find the rolling hills ideal training ground. In central Britanny you will not find yourselves in the midsth of crowds of tourists, but you will find plenty to do. Genuine local markets, traditional 'fetes' and 'pardons,' sports and other activities when you want them, and peace and quiet as well. Plouguernevel areaThe Nantes/Brest canal and its' towpath have been restored to provide good opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing, canoeing (there are shutes for canoes to the side of the locks) and horse riding. Bicycles and canoes are available to hire locally and there is a local riding school for escorted rides. In nearby Plouguernevel there is a mountain bike trail. The Lac de Guerledan offers two good beaches and a range of water sports. There are boat trips around its' perimeter with the opportunity to take lunch on board. The ancient Abbaye de Bon Repos has undergone much restoration work, provides good insight into local history and is the home of an annual Son et Lumiere. There are museums and gardens open to the public. The English proprietors, although generally out of sight, are available when needed, for example for making restaurant reservations or doctor's appointments.
