Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
The Cottage is quietly situated within the grounds of the ancient Manoir de Kerdeven. Kerdeven in set in an area of outstanding natural beauty in central Brittany. It's within easy reach of the market town of Rostrenen. It has a small private garden with outside eating area and barbecue and, in addition, almost 2 acres of the Manoir's gardens that include a heated swimming pool, boules court, trampoline, table tennis, children's play area and a playing field. The Cottage has a comfortably furnished lounge with English Sky satellite TV (free to view channels) and a wood burning stove. The dining area seats 6 and the kitchen is well equipped for a small family. On the ground floor there is a small double room with a 4' bed. There is also a ground floor shower room that is adapted for those with mobility problems. Spiral stairs rise to the first floor where there is a double and a twin bedroom.
2015 TOUR DE FRANCE. For cycling enthusiasts the Tour de France is coming close to Kerdeven in 2015. On July 11 the route is from Rennes to Mur de Bretagne (we are 23 kms from Mur de Bretagne) and on 12th July is goes from Vannes to Plumelec.
2015 sees the emptying of the Lac de Guerledan just a short drive away. This is an exceptional event, not to be missed. The last time this was done is about 3 decades ago when the hydro electro dam last needed maintenance. At that time there was great interest in the landscape that was uncovered showing the whole of the community that was swallowed when the valley was flooded, together with 7 of the locks along the Nantes to Brest canal. This year you will be able to walk or cycle along the footpaths and tracks around the lake and also take advantage of guided tours (in a range of languages) that will take place every day during the summer season. These will take you down into the lake area and will cover the history of the lake and the people who lived there, together with some of the legends linked to it.
The Tourist Board tell us that many events and guided tours will be offered throughout the summer of 2015 and we will update this information as it becomes available.

About this location
The Brittany region
Central Brittany is often likened to Cornwall, but without the high density of population. The countryside is green and gently rolling with many tracks and lanes to explore on foot or bicycle. The climate is warm and mild, similar to that of the Channel Islands. It is an ancient land with its' own language and strong traditions. At Kerdeven we are close to the Route Touristique des Pierres. These are large standing stones set in an enormous circle around Brittany and having a similar sort of age to Stonehenge. The Nantes/Brest canal is nearby. This was built at the behest of Bonaparte by labourers from local prisons in a bid to get supplies to his troops without running the gauntlet of the British Fleet. It now provides a range of leisure activities. The beautiful Lac de Guerledan is about the size of Windermere and only a short drive away. The area is very popular with cycling teams who find the rolling hills ideal training ground - the 'tour de France' usually passes somewhere nearby. In central Britanny you will not find yourselves in the midsth of crowds of tourists, but you will find plenty to do. Genuine local markets, traditional 'fetes' and 'pardons,' sports and other activities when you want them, and peace and quiet as well.
The Nantes/Brest canal and its' towpath have been restored to provide good opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing, canoeing (there are chutes for canoes to the side of the locks) and horse riding. Bicycles and canoes are available to hire locally and there is a local riding school for escorted rides. In nearby Plouguernevel there is a mountain bike trail. The Lac de Guerledan offers two good beaches and a range of water sports. There are boat trips around its' perimeter with the opportunity to take lunch on board. The ancient Abbaye de Bon Repos has undergone much restoration work, provides good insight into local history and is the home of an annual Son et Lumiere. There are museums and gardens open to the public. The English proprietors, although generally out of sight, are available when needed, for example for making restaurant reservations or doctor's appointments.
