The Brittany / Cotes-D'Armor region
First impressions of central Brittany are often ones of relative emptiness. It is often described as similar to Cornwall but without the density of population. Roads tend to be quiet and a pleasure to drive on. The climate is mild and warm, similar to that of the Channel Islands.
Le Manoir de Kerdeven is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and there are breathtaking views. The Lac de Guerledan is around the size of Windermere and only short drive away. The Nantes/Brest canal is close by. It was built at the behest of Bonaparte by local prisoners as a means of transporting supplies to his troops without running the gauntlet of the British Fleet. It is now a beautiful and tranquil setting for many leisure activities.
Local markets are a 'must' to visit, truly authentic without a tourist bauble in sight they offer a wonderful range of local produce (home made bread, pates, charcuterie and much, much more. Try the restaurants the local people use - usually wonderful value for money and invariable using the produce of the area. We are always pleased to discuss which villages have 'fetes' or 'pardons' during your visit. Well worth joining in and often they include an evening meal and perhaps some informal dancing. These are very much family events and children are both welcome and expected. The nearby town of Rostrenen has a choice of supermarkets, restaurants and a weekly market.
Plouguernevel area
The nearby Nantes/Brest canal and its' tow path provide a beautiful backdrop to a range of leisure activities. For example fishing, walking, cycling, horse riding and canoeing. Bicycles and canoes can be hired locally. There is a riding school that provides escorted rides. At Plouguernevel there is a mountain bike trail. Around Kerdeven itself you can enjoy beautiful walks along the quiet tracks and lanes.
The Lac de Guerledan has 2 lovely beaches and also a good range of water sports. There are many opportunities to find out about the history of the region including museums, galleries, chateaux and gardens open to the public. The Abbaye de Bon Repos has been the subject of a restoration project over the last several years, provides a rich tapestry of experiences from the past and, each summer, holds a spectacular Son et Lumiere (including jousting).
