The Brittany / Cotes-D'Armor region
Central Brittany is a place of beautiful rolling countryside. It has often been likened to Cornwall, but without the high population. It is a place of peace and the opportunity to persue a range of country sports and activities without tripping over tourists at every turn. Visit the local markets - truly authentic markets for all year round trade. In most weeks one local village or another has a 'fete' or 'pardon.'
These are usually full of local colour, attended by local people and often end the day with a good hearty meal and perhaps some dancing. Children are always welcome. We are always pleased to advise you how to take best advantage of these opportunities.
If cycling is your interest we should perhaps mention that many cycling teams practice in this area, the countryside could have been designed to test your skills, or provide gentle excercise along the canal towpath if is this is more your style. Fishing is a popular hobby with many Bretons, with large patches of garden being the 'norm' many have created there own fishing ponds! For others ther is the canall towpath or local lakes. We will be pleased to advise about necessaery licences.
For those interested in history, Kerdeven is close to the Routes Touristique des Menhirs. This is a giant circle of ancient standing stones dotted in a circle around Brittany. We are always pleased to discuss your particular interests before you start your holiday.
Plouguernevel area
Plouguernevel is a small town with a chemist, bar and small shop. For more complete shopping Rostrenen is only around 5 miles and has a good choice of supermarkets, restaurants and shops.
It is market day on Tuesday in Rostrenen, there is always an extensive range of stalls over a wide area of the town. It is well worth a visit. There is undercover tennis in Rostrenen, a cinema, a variety of restaurants (we will be pleased to advise and book your table if you wish).
How to get there
Ryanair go direct from Stansted to Dinard which is about 90 miles away. Brittany ferries travel from Portsmouth to St. Malo and Caan and from Plymouth to St. Malo.
Condor Ferries go from Portsmouth to St. Malo and also from Weymouth via the Channel Islands. LD Lines is a budget ferry line and goes from Portsmouth to Le Havre which is about a 4 hour drive.
Speedferries from Dover to Boulogne is the shortest crossing and sometimes preferred for those with pets. Its travels from Dover to Boulogne taking about 50 minutes only. It is around the least expensive crossing and we find it takes about 6 hours to drive to Kerdeven from Boulogne.
We are happy discuss crossings to suit your needs as prices vary according to season. If we know of any special offers we are happy to let you know about them. We will also send full directions from your point of entry to Kerdeven if required.

The cottage is set in the rolling countryside of central Brittany. It is close to the Nantes/Brest canal (built by inmates of local prisons on the instructions of Bonaparte to open up a route for transporting supplies to his troops without running the gauntlet of the British Fleet).
In recent years much of the canal has been renovated and it has a good towpath with opportunities for cycling, walking, horseriding, canoeing (there are shutes to the side of the locks) and fishing. Cycles and canoes can be hired locally. A local riding school offers escorted rides. There is an off road mountain bike trail at Plouguernevel.
The nearby Lac de Guerleden is about the size of Windermere and has two good beaches and a wide range of water sports. It is also possible to book a boat trip around the lake whilst taking lunch. The ancient Abbaye de Bon Repos has undergone much restoration work, provides a good insight into local history and is home to an annual spectacular Son et Lumiere. There are museums and gardens open to the public and the English proprietors, although generally out of sight, are available when needed, for example for making restaurant bookings or doctor's appointments.
