The Brittany region

Villa Lesaux – what makes it special - The owners view.

Our villa is a private house, set in 3.5 acres of secluded landscaped gardens (typically known as a 'parc' in France), the central part of the garden consisting of lawn with mature specimen trees and palms, surrounded by an outer layer of wild woodland to provide privacy and shelter. It is located within quiet countryside of rolling hills, with large amounts of deciduous woodland interspersed with fields. Wildlife abounds in the region, including red squirrels, pine martens, deer, bats, the occasional wild boar and a diverse range of birdlife including owls, nuthatches, jays, hawks and buzzards. We live within the grounds during the summer in a separate property and feed the garden birds daily and many guests have enjoyed watching the numerous small birds on the feeders around the garden, or indeed bird watching in the local area.

As guests will appreciate, this large garden has to be maintained in the same way as you would expect a large garden around a hotel to be maintained, with mowing/weeding being visible to guests. We try to do this mid-week when guests are out, but this is not always possible, but no mowing is done in the early morning, to avoid disturbing your sleep!

Due to the clever planning of the original owners who built this unique Parisien style villa in 1975, the design of the mature garden makes full use of the hilltop setting, having maximum potential for sunshine at the house, but sheltered from the worst of the Breton winds. This typically leads to a microclimate within the central part of the garden around the villa, which we have found can be around 10 degrees warmer than the 'external' temperature.

The private swimming pool is a typical villa pool, set close to the house with direct access from the south west rooms and master bedroom. It is 3x7x1.5m deep, with a bespoke secure domed cover that slides back. Conforming to French law, this cover is always kept closed when not in use to ensure the safety of children (also to ensure that animals cannot get into the pool, and to keep the pool warm and clean). It is possible to swim under the cover using entry via a special hatch, (popular with guests for an evening swim). The pool is heated by a large bank of solar panels, which are very effective – during the letting season for 2009, pool temperatures did not fall below 28 degrees, and for the majority of weeks were between 30 and 32 degrees. The warmer temperature of the water (compared to most outdoor pools) means that it is very important for us to maintain cleanliness and correct levels of chlorine and ph, so that the pool is safe for swimming and kept sparkling clean and blue. Pool checks are done daily by at about 11:00am. The pool is fully cleaned and topped up every Wednesday, during which access will be required to the villa's cellar where the pool filter and pump are located.

Our villa is a loved family home for the majority of the year, we keep it well maintained and take pride in presenting it to a very high standard of cleanliness for guests. It is extensively cleaned and fully checked between departing and arriving guests, to try to avoid any loss of standards. In return we kindly ask that guests treat the property and gardens with care and respect.

We are English (one fluent French speaking) and are happy to provide assistance to guests who may require help with any aspect of the local language, or who on rare occasions may require access to emergency services etc whilst on holiday. During the letting season we live within the grounds in a separate property,25m from and not overlooking the villa, with its own private, fenced and hedged quarter acre garden, along with 2 dogs and 4 cats. The two properties share the same driveway, so guests will see us walking the dogs out on the lead down the drive to the quiet single-track country lane that runs alongside the gardens.

Enjoy your stay we think its wonderful here!

Plouay

The Lohic promenade on the 17th C ramparts offers picturesque views of the little village of Gavres and the boats and dinghies that are beached at low tide. The Grands-Sables beach is a favourite with locals for bathing and water-sports.

Interceltic Festival - Between 1 and 15 August, Celts flock to Lorient from all over the Celtic world for this festival, which brings the whole town to life.

There are players of bagpipes and bombards, folk dancers, and performers of all kinds, combining live performances with son et lumiere, fireworks, parades, bagadou competitions, concerts and, of course the famous Breton festou-noz (feast nights), which last far into the evening.

It is attended by several hundred thousand people, making it the largest festival of its kind in France and the highlight of the Lorient year. (Information 02 97 21 24 29).
