Home description

Poulmarvezen was formerly a farmstead whose history can be traced back for centuries. The original choice of the site for a farm was on account of the natural spring that occurs here, (even to this day), and the unique Breton name Poulmarvezen reflects this (Poul, pool). The oldest of the buildings that remain was built in the late 1600’s, a fortified farm with its own stone spiral staircase in a stone tower, complete with gun slit! The old prison has long since disappeared, along with the right to imprison local miscreants. The first addition to the longere (longhouse) was built in 1729, and the standard of the finely dressed stonework reveals that the farm must have prospered in the interim. Later additions were made in the early 1800’s.

Rose gardens and lawns now stand where once could be heard the sounds of shire horses, cattle and people hard at work. What does remain is the cluster of time-mellowed stone buildings, still surrounded by completely unspoiled, beautiful, wooded, rolling countryside. In total we have four acres of lawns, gardens, and woodland, complete with a shady picnic area next to our own stream!

Poulmarvezen is also thought to have had religious and/or monastic connections, as there are no records of taxes having been paid in the distant past! A stone cross was discovered during renovations, hidden under a stone-flag floor, possibly during the French Revolution.

The Brittany / Morbihan region

Brittany is naturally an area rich in Celtic culture and traditions. Each summer there is a major Celtic festival at Lorient, nearby Guemene celebrates it local speciality the Andouille (a smelly sausage to you and me) every year with a day long street party with bands, displays, and an unforgettable under-the-stars Fest Noz, (“Night party” consisting of mainly Breton dancing and a little drinking thrown in, with remarkably never any alcohol-related trouble!).

These local Breton dances are very popular and held in villages and towns throughout the year. Typically, all age groups join in, from small children to seniors, and dance to the very distinct and popular music, that has a hypnotic Moorish quality to it. The locals are only too happy for visitors to join them. Bring your video camera!

Ploerdut / Poulmarvezen area

The villages of Ploerdut & Lignol (both 3 kms) have bars, restaurants, boulangeries etc., Guemene-sur-Scorff (10 mins) has all the facilities of a thriving small french town, banks, hairdressers, supermarket etc. The area abounds with "things to do", just ask us! Ideal cycling/walking country.

The “Pardon” (religious procession) at nearby Crenenan (along with others) is a colourful, day long not-to-be-missed experience unparalleled in modern life, with traditional Breton costume in abundance, and a photographers dream!

Further details indoors:
On offer are two adjoining properties (La Grange and La Ferme) that can be rented together or separately, offering a group pf 12 people (plus babies) "togetherness" with the option of some privacy.

La Ferme ... On the ground floor there is a massive open plan lounge with huge traditional breton fireplace with woodburner, stone spiral staircase in its own tower, dining area and fully fitted kitchen, tiled throughout with rose-coloured terracotta tiles, which contrast nicely with the clean white walls and 300 year-old beams.
The lounge area has comfortable sofas and pieces of Victorian pine furniture, and the smart kitchen area is complete with single-drainer sink unit, fridge-freezer, gas cooker, and microwave oven.
On the first floor there are three bedrooms (two doubles and one twin) ALL with en-suite shower room. Again there are original beams throughout.

La Grange ... On the ground floor there is an open plan lounge with dining area and fully fitted kitchen, tiled throughout with rose-coloured terracotta tiles, which contrast nicely with the clean white walls and white boarded ceilings. The lounge area has comfortable sofas and pieces of Victorian pine furniture, and the smart kitchen area is complete with single-drainer sink unit, fridge-freezer, gas hob, and multifunction microwave oven. There is also a double bedroom with en-suite shower room with W.C. and basin.
On the first floor, under an interesting mansard-shaped ceiling, again with white-boarded ceilings, and with exposed chestnut roof timbers, there is a spacious bedroom with king sized bed, another spacious bedroom with twin-beds, and a shower room with W.C. and washbasin.

Both properties are south facing and have fantastic views of the open countryside.

Further details outdoors:
Poulmarvezen is situated at the end of a very pretty lane, and as a consequence there is no passing traffic, and therefore safe for children. The absence of noise of any description is also very noticeable. At night the sky is free from light pollution, and you can touch the Milky Way. (not guaranteed!)
All four properties have fantastic views, and each has its own exclusive area of garden complete with barbecue, table and chairs, and sun-loungers. If there is a baby in your family we can supply cot, high chair and baby bath free of charge.
There is a 9m x 4.5m in-ground heated swimming pool with safety fence an alarm system which is always kept in immaculate condition for your use.
We have four acres of woodlands lawns and gardens, and children can have some old-fashioned fun building wigwams etc down in the woodlands. There is a shady picnic table next to a little stream, very pleasant on hot days!
Secure parking. Bi-lingual owners on site.
