On the ground floor there is an open plan lounge with dining area and fully fitted kitchen, tiled throughout with rose-coloured terracotta tiles, which contrast nicely with the clean white walls and white boarded ceilings. The lounge area has comfortable sofas and pieces of Victorian pine furniture, and the smart kitchen area is complete with single-drainer sink unit, fridge-freezer, gas hob, and multifunction microwave oven. There is also a double bedroom with en-suite shower room with W.C. and basin.

On the first floor, under an interesting mansard-shaped ceiling, again with white-boarded ceilings, and with exposed chestnut roof timbers, there is a spacious bedroom with king sized bed, another spacious bedroom with twin-beds, and a shower room with W.C. and washbasin.

The barn is south facing and has fantastic views of the open countryside. Poulmarvezen is at the end of a very pretty lane, there is no passing traffic, so it is very quiet and tranquil. There is a private garden with garden furniture and barbecue.

POULMARVEZEN was formerly a farmstead whose history can be traced back for centuries. The original choice of the site for a farm was on account of the natural spring that occurs here, (even to this day), and the unique Breton name Poulmarvezen reflects this (Poul, pool). The oldest of the buildings that remain was built in the late 1600's, a fortified farm with its own stone spiral staircase in a stone tower, complete with gun slit! The old prison has long since disappeared, along with the right to imprison local miscreants. The first addition to the longere (longhouse) was built in 1729, and the standard of the finely dressed stonework reveals that the farm must have prospered in the interim. Later additions were made in the early 1800's.

Rose gardens and lawns now stand where once could be heard the sounds of shire horses, cattle and people hard at work. What does remain is the cluster of time-mellowed stone buildings, still surrounded by completely unspoiled, beautiful, wooded, rolling countryside. In total we have four acres of lawns, gardens, and woodland, complete with a shady picnic area next to our own stream.

Poulmarvezen is also thought to have had religious and/or monastic connections, as there are no records of taxes having been paid in the distant past! A stone cross was discovered during renovations, hidden under a stone-flag floor, possibly during the French Revolution.

Poulmarvezen is situated at the end of a very pretty lane, and as a consequence there is no passing traffic, and therefore safe for children. The absence of noise of any description is also very noticeable. At night the sky is free from light pollution, and you can touch the Milky Way. (not guaranteed!)

All five properties have fantastic views, and each has its own exclusive area of garden complete with barbecue, table and chairs, and sun-loungers. If there is a baby in your family we can supply cot, high chair and baby bath free of charge.

There is a 9m x 4.5m in-ground swimming pool with safety fence an alarm system which is always kept in immaculate condition for your use.

We have four acres of woodlands lawns and gardens, and children can have some old-fashioned fun building wigwams etc down in the woodlands. There is a shady picnic table next to a little stream, very pleasant on hot days! Secure parking.

The Brittany region

Brittany is an area rich in Celtic culture and traditions. Each summer there is a major Celtic festival at Lorient, nearby Guemene celebrates it local speciality the Andouille (a raher smelly sausage) every year with a day long street party with bands, displays, and an unforgettable under-the-stars Fest Noz, (“Night party”consisting of mainly Breton dancing and a little drinking thrown in, with remarkably never any alcohol-related trouble!) These local Breton dances are very popular and held in villages and towns throughout the year. Typically, all age groups join in, from small children to seniors, and dance to the very distinct and popular music, that has a hypnotic Moorish quality to it. The locals are only too happy for visitors to join them. Bring your video camera!

Ploerdut

The villages of Ploerdut & Lignol (both 3 kms) have bars, restaurants, boulangeries etc., Guemene-sur-Scorff (10 mins) has all the facilities of a thriving small french town, banks, hairdressers, supermarket etc. The area abounds with "things to do", just ask us! Ideal cycling/walking country.

The “Pardon” (religious procession) at nearby Crenenan (along with others) is a colourful, day long not-to-be-missed experience unparalleled in modern life, with traditional Breton costume in abundance, and a photographers dream!

"Excellent"

We had 11 days here in Autumn 2010. The accommodation was excellent, well equipped and comfortable with the pool and gardens well maintained. The woods would be exciting for children to explore and make dens. The surrounding countryside was beautiful and the location made an excellent base to explore some of the region. We would certainly wish to visit the area again.

"Woodland retreat -- go to the middle of nowhere and take the first left."

We stayed in the Ferme. It was a super mix of old and new -- ancient fireplace and spiral staircase up to modern bright bedrooms. Spotlessly clean; all mod cons; great pool. Lots of woodland for the kids to explore and bing home wood for the wood-burner for those unexpectetdly cool and damp evenings!! Plenty to see and do -- within striking distance of the coast but of the beaten track. We'll be back!!

"A Fantastic Find"

A peaceful and beautiful location, at night, under completely dark skies, we stargazed, my daughters seeing the milky way for the first time. The property was well equiped and spotlessly clean. The pool a real asset. Building bivouacs in the woods was an added bonus.

"Lovely location; children loved the pool and the grounds to explore."

We have 3 small children - 2, 3 and 5 years old. The pool area was secure and our 5 year old swam without a float and armbands for the first time during our holiday. The atmosphere was very relaxed and we enjoyed meeting and getting to know the other families and couples staying in the other on site accomodation. The 3 and 5 year old enjoyed exploring the foresty area to the back of the properties - a great area to discover nature.
We hardly did any excursions or trips as the children were happy playing in the grounds. Would recommend it for anyone who just wants to relax.

"Relaxing holiday in very comfortable gite with a lovely pool."

We had a pretty private garden where we ate all our meals. The accommodation was ideal for us with a family of three young children (aged 4, 7 and 8), with a very light and airy comfortable open plan living area and well equipped kitchen and downstairs the bathroom and two bedrooms- the boys one had three single beds which is hard to find usually and great for us. The clean well kept pool was a huge hit with the boys and it was nice to have the company of other families by the pool (although we also had it to ourselves a number of times)and then the quiet and privacy in the gite. We were well looked after and it was all very clean and attractively furnished. Lots of lovely small villages nearby to visit and we did a few local walks.

"Unspoilt beauty and fantastic gites"

My family and I stayed at poulmarvezen in July 2011. We loved every minute of our stay. The accommodation and location was possibly the best that we have encountered in France with splendid views over the corn fields and a nice pool to relax in after touring the countryside and local villages. The gites are only ten minutes from the village of Plourdut where you can sit at the local friendly bar/tabac and talk to the locals. The gite gardens were immaculate and the owners are very helpful and friendly. The gite has everything you need to have a nice relaxing break away from the ratrace. I can honestly say that we will return to Poulmarvezen soon.

"10/10 for accommodation – surroundings – hosts all that is needed for a perfect holiday"

Family of 5 – Mum + Dad, elder son and girlfriend and younger son (teenager) spent a wonderful week in La Chaumiere at Poulmarvezen. The setting was beautiful we had a wonderful converted barn – plenty of room for us all – not on top of each other – nice spacious bedrooms with air conditioning. The facilities inside and outside the gite were great – the gite was well equipped for cooking – we could choose to eat outside or in – the pool was great – there was enough room to kick a ball around and play a bit of cricket without bothering other people (actually we wouldn't have known other people were there if the cars hadn't given it away) Nice bakery/grocery 10 mins away. We had a wonderfully relaxing week – topped off by Ron and Sue sourcing us a wonderful cake for our sons 14th birthday which was on the day we arrived. We would highly recommend Poulmarvezen.
