The Western Cape region
Plettenberg Bay boasts a glorious temperate climate all year round and offers one of the best climates in South Africa. Summers are pleasantly warm with comparatively low humidity, while winters are particularly mild, with year-round rainfall. Spring starts by mid September. High summer begins from November to March and the warm temperatures peak from December to February at around 30°C.
The temperatures start to cool from April although it can still be very pleasant until June. June, July and August are Plettenberg Bay's winter months and although still bright and warm days can also be wet and cold.
A highlight during spring is the arrival of several species of whales, including the rare Southern Right, which breed and calve in the sheltered waters. Plettenberg Bay is one of the top destinations in the world for boat based whale and dolphin watching. Due to the large number of whale and dolphin species found in the bay (five whale and three dolphin species), the Centre for Dolphin Studies is located in Plettenberg Bay. Three species of whale can be seen throughout the year.
