The Western Cape region
The Garden Route stretches along the Southern Cape coast from Stilbaai in the West through Mossel Bay and on to George, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Keurboomstrand, The Crags, Nature's Valley and Tsitsikamma to the East.
Some 80km of rocky coastline comprise the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park, a place of deep, heavily scarred gorges, cliffs, tidal pools and thick evergreen forests. There are walking trails that range from comfortable day-long hikes too much longer treks.
For a less strenuous experience, take a canopy tour. Standing almost 100 feet in the air, surrounded by 100-year-old hardwood trees, visitors slide along cables, zipping from platform to platform in the treetops.
Not to be outdone by the heights of Tsitsikamma, the nearby Bloukrans Bridge offers a heady rush of a different kind. At 708 feet, Bloukrans is the highest commercial bungy bridge jump in the world.
Keurboomstrand derives its name from the Virgilia oroboides or choice tree. It is a small beach village on the Garden Route with mountains to the north, 7km of beach to the south, the hustle and bustle of Plettenberg Bay to the west and forest to the east. Visitors are attracted to the area for its natural and unspoilt beauty.
Families can enjoy visits to the wide range of wild animal and bird parks in the area. Hiking and nature lovers can walk through the Tsitsikamma National Park, Keurbooms River and the Robberg Nature Reserves. Hire a boat or canoe or take a ferry ride up the Keurbooms River. Picnic sites and barbecues are available on its banks. For the adrenalin junky bungy from the world's highest bridge at Bloukrans or experience the rush of a 35 second free fall tandem sky dive.
Southern right whales visit Keurbooms and Plettenberg Bay from about June to November. Migratory humpback whales can also be briefly seen from May and June and then, on their return trip, from about November to January. Bryde's whales or orcas are occasionally seen, and bottlenose and humpback dolphins are in residence all year. A breeding colony of Cape fur seals completes Plettenberg Bays' impressive array of marine mammals.
On the Keurbooms peninsula, Lookout Beach and Robberg peninsula, interns and students of the Nature's Valley Trust in partnership with BirdLife Plettenberg Bay and Cape Nature, work on the Kelp Gull and African Black Oystercatcher colonies that share our beaches.
There are also a variety of special places located just outside Keurboomstrand that must be visited. These include the Elephant Sanctuary, Monkeyland and the Birds of Eden, the largest free-flight bird aviary in the world.
