The Brittany region

This is a region of lush forest, farmland and rugged coast. Much of this is ripe for exploring, thanks to extensive trails and an official network of footpaths (yellow for walkers, red for bikes).

It's all there to be discovered: near-deserted beaches, perfectly preserved medieval towns, secluded chapels and abbeys, standing stones. And of course the food and drink is irresistible: seafood, cider, crepes and salt caramel are among the local specialities.

Major attractions include medieval Dinan - Britanny's most attractive town, with its ramparts, half-timbered buildings and cobbled streets. Nearby Dinard is an upmarket port whose antique shops demand to be explored. Vibrant Rennes combines medieval splendour with a cosmopolitan bustle.

Plessala

There are many options for walks from the cottage, passing local beauty spots such as La Roche aux Cerfs - a beautiful river spot with a newly restored mill. Some suggested routes are provided at the cottage to help you get familiar with the area.

Slightly further afield, these are a few of the trips we'd recommend:

- wandering medieval Moncontour, a 'petite cite de charactere' (20 mins away)

- sampling local 'moules frites' outdoors - for instance on the coast at Jospinet (45 mins)

- exploring the cliff walks and beaches around Pleneuf val Andre and Erquy (45 mins)

- discovering the astounding Chaos du Gouet - a river dotted with fascinating granite formations (45 mins)

- shopping and eating in coastal resorts such as Vannes in the south and Dinard in the north (1 hour)

- walking among the mysterious and world-famous megaliths of Carnac (1.5 hours).

"Expensive, given the grimy state of the dwelling and poor management"

dirty kitchen; un-sorted rubbish; general dampness. We spent too much time cleaning kitchen equipment and mending bathroom fittings. The rent for this sort of badly maintained property was excessive… More

"Disappointing property lacking love and care"

While the location/area is lovely and the property lived up to the promised peace and quiet, we were hugely disappointed to arrive after a 10 hour drive to a damp, bad-smelling, rather neglected house… More

Well, like most traditional, thick-walled old cottages, this one is certainly prone to damp at times. But I haven't experienced the extreme effects you mention while staying (and nor have other guests). The shower runs from the bath taps; there's a slight knack to connecting it, but not especially daunting. The kitchen issues do concern me, though, and I've ensured they are addressed.

"A delightful rural place to stay"

If your looking to stay away from the crowds and enjoy the rural life this is the cottage to stay in. Its well equipped and comfortable and you will be lucky if you get more than a handful of cars past the cottage a day. Great for dogs, (the garden is not fenced but not a problem with my dogs). You are right in the centre between the north and south coast so Brittany is your oyster. The weather was not fantastic when we were there so we did enjoy some of the DVD's at the property and there is also a great selection of books. A great quiet place to stay.

"Charming and peaceful cottage in good location to explore area"

A lovely cottage, set in a peaceful location yet easy to drive to both the north and south coast and also surrounded by various delightful villages and towns to explore.

The cottage was extremely well equipped - the kitchen was stocked with herbs and any utensil you could wish for, there was no shortage of towels and a great collection of books, dvds and games. On arrival there was a very useful welcome pack answering any questions that sprang to mind and also offering tips for walks and possible excursions.

Would thoroughly recommend this cottage to anyone wanting to explore Brittany or just looking for a quiet break.
