The La Gomera region
La Gomera is the second smallest of the Canary Islands. It is approximately circular, some 17 miles across. There are some 22000 inhabitants. The Island is extremely rugged and consequently not over run with development.
Its climate is one of the island's main attractions, average temperatures range from 20 degrees c in the winter to 27 degrees c in the summer. Playa Santiago enjoys some 3000 hours of sunshine a year. Rain is occasional in the winter.
La Gomera was Chrisopher Colombus's final departure point before setting off to discover America. One of the Island's most attractive features is the variety of vegetation and scenery.
Approximately two thirds of the Island is a World heritage site and within that the top third of the Island is a National park. The opportunities for exploring and walking are superb. Very few people visit La Gomera only once! Apparently even Christopher Columbus returned after discovering America!
Playa Santiago area
Playa Santiago is a former fishing village and indeed some fishing still takes place. There are basic shops, small supermarkets, bakery, pharmacy, ironmonger and a flower shop.
It is perfectly possible to get all one needs here although a visit to the main supermarket in San Sebastian offers an even greater choice and has an excellent Saturday Market.
The village is built round a small harbour and the sea front has many bars and restaurants. The atmosphere is 'laid back' and charming.
A list of recommended restaurants will be found in the apartment.
How to get there
The best way to get to La Gomera is via Tenerife. There are many budget airlines flying into Tenerife South. Easyjet from Gatwick, Monarch from Birmingham and Thompson From Cardiff are all frequent and reasonable.
From the airport it is a short (20 mins ) taxi drive to the port and then a 35 min ferry crossing to the island.
On arriving in San Sebastian, the island's port it is a 40 min drive to Pueblo Don Thomas.
It is advisable to hire a car either in San Sebastian or in Playa Santiago. We are very happy to advise or help with travel arrangements.
