Home description
Playa Santiago is where to be if you like a warm sunny climate, good fish restaurants and a relaxed, informal atmosphere. Even in winter the daytime maximum rarely goes below 20ºC. The pace is slow and a bit behind the times, with a distinctly Latin American feel. The apartment is in the pretty, old part of town with wonderful sea views from its large terrace accessed from the open plan living dining kitchen area. It is light and airy inside with a double bedroom and twin bedroom. Great getaway from it all destination, far from the crowds with the sea and fabulous scenery and hiking nearby, yet all mod cons in the apartment.

The La Gomera region
La Gomera is the second smallest island in the Canarian archipelago situated due west of Tenerife. Its widest point is only 14 miles with the highest point at 1485 metres (5000ft). Even today it is largely unspoilt due to its mountainous terrain. The top two fifths of the island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its amazing 'laurisilva' cloud forest, the Garajonay National Park. From here to the sea beautiful fertile valleys cut into the surface providing dramatic scenery and a maze of fabulous walks as good as anywhere in the Canaries.
On the coast, the weather is warm all year round and there are all types of beaches dotted all around the island, many are still as nature made them, with very few people and no facilities and when sitting there can give you the feeling you are alone on the planet. Snorkelling and scuba diving are popular as well as whale watching tours.
La Gomera is probably best known for two things: firstly that it is the last place Christopher Columbus stopped at before discovering America in 1492. In the capital San Sebastian, you can visit various Columbine spots with collected memorabilia and view the Torre del Conde where his 'friend' the widow of the first Spanish tyrant lived. Also famous for its whistling language 'El Silbo', developed centuries ago for communicating across the valleys, the language is kept alive by being taught at school, so you may well hear it when you come to La Gomera
Playa Santiago / Laguna de Santiago area
Playa Santiago is well positioned to visit all parts of La Gomera. In 20 minutes the local ferry will take you to Valle Gran Rey on the west coast where there are more tourist facilities and three sandy beaches. Or in 15 minutes in the other direction to San Sebastian, the capital, with the best shops, the fruit and vegetable market, a marina and two sandy beaches. The local bus service will also take you in land to the cloud forest where you can walk back to the apartment. Playa Santiago itself has a Dive School, bicycle and kayak hire, the only golf course on the island a 15 minute walk away and several fish restaurants, one of which is located in a natural cave.
How to get there
Fly to Tenerife South airport (TFS) and from there take a 15 minute taxi or bus ride to Los Cristianos port and take one of frequent the ferries to La Gomera. Cheapest flights from Easyjet, Monarch, Thomsonfly, Ryanair. Flights from most UK provincial airports From Los Cristianos take the Garajonay Expres direct to Playa Santiago. The apartments are a 20 minute walk or a 5 minute taxi ride. If you don't like ferries, you can fly to Tenerife North or Las Palmas and then take the local Binter Canarias flight to Gomera airport (GMZ) which is a 5 minute taxi ride from the apartments. Daily morning and evening departures from both airports.
