The Isla Margarita region

Margarita Island emerges out of the warm water in the Carribean sea with a surface of 934 sq. km (33 km by 67 km), 316 km of beautiful beaches, mountains, deserts, valleys and plains. With an average annual temperature at 30ºC (86ºF) and together with Coche and Cubagua Islands, they form the State of Nueva Esparta. The islands have a similar geological construction and are located 37 km from the nort east of Venezuela.

The Island itself is an example of contrasts. Porlamar , with it´s modern buildings and sofisticated boutiques offering the very best of the world in clothing and decorations….Bodegones (delikatessen) full with fine vines and exquisite food imported from all over the world….the Free Market Conejeros… handcarft stores… picturesque kiosques offering fried fish, cachapas (kind of a corn pancake), cocadas…restaurants offering French, Italian, Japanese and International dishes as well as local ones.

And the villages, with its ever present shaded plaza,…churches telling tales form other times and that always are visited by devots…..the remains of the Colonial Arquitecture…the warmth of the natives with their very own way of talking that makes them sound as if they were always joking….and of course its beaches.

According to a legend, Margarita was created by the teardrop of a cherub and nammed the "Pearl of the carribean". In reality, however, it formed when a narrow sand bar emerged from the sea and connected two adjacent islands. The sandbar and the surroundings, which comprise mangroves, salt-flats and a lagoon, are now the Laguan de la Restinga National Park.

The Macanao Peninsula forms the western side of Margarita and is characterized by its distinctive red earth covered with cactuses and mangrove swamps. The land is dry, barren and infertile, and most of the territory is desolate scrub; yet the striking colours lend the peninsula a rare and pecular beauty. The inland area remains undevelopped, home to just wild deer, goats and hares that browse the sparse vegetation on the hills. Finally, let's mention that the capital of the state, La Ascuncion was so chosen for the sole reason that its inland location would shield it from pirates attacks.

Playa El Aqua area

The beach is definitely the thing on Margarita Island. There are more than 50 beaches on the island with crystal clear water. Some are very calm and ideal for relaxing as others are great for windsurf or surf.
sla de Margarita

Margarita has two national parks: Cerro El Copey and Laguna de la Restinga, and three natural monuments (small parks): Cerro Matasiete y Guayamuri, La Laguna de las Marites and Las Tetas de Maria Guevara. All of these areas protect a range of habitats and are home to various species of wildlife. Birds such as flamingoes, pelicans and scarlet ibis are most prolific in and around the mangrove swamps of La Laguna de la restinga.

The Parc has a an area of 10,700 ha and can be reached easily by road. Visitors can hire boats from the jetty to cruise the mangroves. Cerro El Copey covers an area of 7,130 ha and is made of both flat land with small villages and woodland-covered mountains, the latter of which offer fantastic view of the island. The park is located in the central eastern part of the main island and can be reached by road from La Asuncion.

The first stop will be at the Peninsula Macanao in a small town called Boca de Rio where we visit the wonderful Museum El Museum Marino to learn about the fabulous marine flora and fauna around the island. Afterwards we visit Margarita’s exuberant Mangrove forester, riding in one of the typical Peñeros boats, enjoying the scenery with marvellous bird life, seahorses, starfish and thousands of oysters.

Laguna de la Restinga:
La Restinga is a gorgeous national park consisting of an amazing mangrove forest, water channels and lagoons. It is located in the small piece of land connecting the eastern and western sections of Margarita Island. Upon arrival to the park you will see a dock where many motorized boats await to take visitors on tours through the channels. Each boat can carry up to five people (although we did see one group of six) and costs 30,000 Bolivares (approx $13 per boat) for a half hour tour of the park.

After this tour you can have the boat driver drop you at the beach and arrange a time to be picked up. The other option (and the one we recommend) is the hour long tour which costs 50,000 Bolivares per boat (approx $22). This tour offers a more extensive look into the park with a half an hour boat ride, a visit to the beach (once again, just arrange with the driver as to what time you would like to be picked up) and then another half hour journey before returning to the main entrance.
