The Tenerife region
With it’s year round pleasant climate, Tenerife offers a wide ranging choice of outdoor activities. Many of the attractions lie in its natural resources but there is a number of man made attractions in the larger towns and resorts. Most places are easily accessible by car, tourist coach trips or a very reliable public transport system.
Diving- The island and its surrounding waters offer some of the most popular dive sites in the world. The majority of dive centres operate on the West Coast (45 minute drive from Los Cristianos) offering beginner courses to divemaster with equipment for hire if required. www.losgigantesmarina.com www.buceotenerife.com
Fishing- Big game fishing is also popular along the West Coast – boats may be hired and trips organised from Los Gigantes, Playa San Juan and Los Cristianos.
Windsurfing- El Medano on the South coast provides the best conditions for windsurfing on the Island and is considered to be one of the world’s top ten venues for the sport. Equipment may be hired from the Playa Sur Tenerife Hotel.
Hang gliding- Courses are available for beginners and the more experienced.
Whale and Dolphin watching- Thereis no shortage of companies on the South and West coasts offering whale and dolphin watching trips. For the more adventurous, some will arrange for you to swim from the boat and snorkel. www.tenerifedolphin.com
Horse and Camel rides- There are a number of centres offering Horse, Camel and Donkey rides at reasonable prices catering for all ages.
Golf- There are five championship golf courses all within 20 minutes drive of Los Cristianos. Green fees start at about 30 Euros and most of the courses welcome beginners.
La Gomera- Fred Olsen ferries travel daily to the beautiful island of La Gomera and a coach trip can be organised to show you the sights www.fredolsen.es

Playa de Las Americas / Torviscas area
Torviscas is a pleasant resort far enough out of Las Americas to be peaceful but close enough to it to enjoy its excitement and vibrancy if you wish to experience it. The resort has now matured enough for it to have its own community including shops, restaurants and bars but other resorts are just a short walk away.
Balcon Del Atlantico is actually in Torviscas Alto - just up the hill from Torviscas. If you are happy to simply relax all day by the pool you will not need a car but if you want to explore everyday it may be easy to hire a small car during your stay. We have put a list together of what is currently available within walking distance of the apartment and also some ideas of what else is available in the area.
The complex has two fantastic pools that catch the sun for most of the day – they are not heated but warmed to a nice temperature by the sun. The nearest beach is approximately 15 minutes walk down the hill.
Shops – There are four small supermarkets within walking distance of the apartment that sell all the essentials you will need for your stay. The main one is Netto at the bottom of the hill on the left and there is another further down on the right next to Villa Tagoro. The third is within the Paradise club opposite – if you begin to walk down the hill you will see the entrance on the left and the supermarket is on the left. The closest is next to the local bar – take the second right walking down the hill (look out for the Videoteca sign), walk up Calle Austurias and you will see the bar and shop on your right. They are all a little expensive and if you have a car it would be worth a trip to one of the nearby supermarkets to stock up with non-perishable goods.
If you are happy to explore a little further on foot there are many more shops the other side of the TF1. If you walk down the hill and over the bridge you will come to a traffic Island outside Parque Royale apartments – go straight on heading towards Las Americas and the streets are lined with small shops selling Tobacco, electrical goods and clothes. For more upmarket shopping turn right and head towards Fanabe with its 5* hotels, fine shops and boutiques.
Restaurants and bars – There are plenty of places to eat within a ten minute walk of the apartment and many more if you wish to explore further. We have listed a few that we have tried and can recommend to get you started.
The nearest bar is the one previously mentioned up Calle Austurias. It is small with a friendly atmosphere and serves snacks during the day.
The Paradise club – Walk out the complex, across the road and down the stairs of the opposite complex and there are two restaurants and a bar. One of the restaurants is part of the complex and a little more upmarket and the other is a stand alone business that serves good food at sensible prices. The bar is lively and has live entertainment most evenings.
Phuket - At the bottom of the hill in the same commercial area as Netto is a good Thai restaurant for dine in meals or take away.
Pekin – Opposite the Phuket is a fine Chinese restaurant again for sit in meals or take away.
If you fancy a bit of a stroll you have lots of options but as two suggestions; You can walk over the bridge at the bottom of the hill and head into Torviscas – we recommend turning right at Parque Royale and heading to the beach at Fanabe. Alternatively you can turn left before the bridge, walk along the road that runs parallel to the TF1 and cross the next bridge. There are loads of bars and restaurants along that road.
One of the friendliest bars on the Island is at the entrance to Parque Royale. It is a small bar run by an English guy called Adrian and he will make you feel very welcome. It’s a good place to start and have a couple of beers before eating. He does snacks during the day and shows most of the televised British football games.
Take away Pizza – Head up Calle Austurias and past the bar and supermarket – there is a fantastic take away pizza place further up the road on the left.
DVD hire – Again up Calle Austurias ext to the bar there is a shop that hires DVD’s. All you need is your passport and the address of where you are staying and you may hire a good choice of DVD’s
Golf – If you have a car or fancy the bus there are five courses within ten minutes drive and a further five elsewhere on the island. More information can be found at http://www.tenerifegolf.es/
For those who wish to explore outside the resort you may either hire a car and make your own way or book an excursion with one of the many company’s that organise them from the streets of Los Cristianos or Las Americas. Here are a few examples:
Parque Las Aguilas – A Jungle Park that offers all the usual attractions of a wildlife park and can be found just outside Los Cristianos.
Aqualand – A Waterpark and Dolphinarium just outside Torviscas. http://www.aqualand.es/
Tenerife pearl has an exhibition and workshop that can turn a pearl of your choice into a unique piece of jewellery. It can be found at the end of the TF1 at Armenime and is service from free buses that pick up from various locations.
The quad park offers 200,000m2 of rustic terrain for quad bike fun. http://www.thequadpark.com/
Loro Parque is another wildlife park but is supposed to have some of the best animal shows in the world. A little further out – it is located near Puerto de la Cruz but apparently well worth the trip. http://www.loroparque.com/
Sea fishing, Sailing and Dolphin/Whale watching – There are numerous companies offering excursions of varying length from the ports near Los Cristianos and Las Americas.
Diving – Various companies offer diving excursions and courses for all ages/abilities. http://www.ocean-divers.com/
