The Canary Islands region

Tenerife is the land of eternal sunshine, with annual average temperatures ranging from 72F in Winter to 85F in Summer, which also makes Tenerife ideal for those out of season breaks as well as the more traditional holiday periods. This is definitely the island that has something to offer for everyone, no matter what your interests might be!

Tenerife has a wide choice of holiday attractions, sports and nightlife. It has varied and spectacular scenery, from lush banana plantations and pine forests to cinder deserts and cactus ravines - here you can travel from the subtropical temperatures to the snowline in less than 2 hours.

There are several animal and ecology parks, two water parks for the fun-lovers, go kart tracks, a quad biking park, scuba diving, para gliding and much more for those of you looking for some adventure.

On the other hand, you can just relax on the numerous beaches, pamper yourself with local spa facilities, or take in the beautiful scenery the island has to offer. There are boat trips to see the marine attractions, and jeep or coach trips to discover the many places of interest on land.

Playa de las Americas

San Eugenio is another off-shot of big brother Playa de las Americas. You're ideally placed here for excellent beaches, and just a short walk from Puerto Colon harbour and numerous diving and pleasure boat trips.

The pace is definitely slower here than in the heart of Playa de las Americas, and is a self contained resort with all you could need for a relaxing beach holiday. You won't be short of watersports choice, you've everything here from pedaloes to banana boat rides to jet skis and scuba diving.

Nearby beaches in this area are all ideal for families, with excellent amenities close at hand. Access to the motorway is easy from here for those wishing to travel the island exploring.

The new Siam Park has just opened and is within walking distance, and is said to be an Oriental adventure, not to be missed.

"The Best of both worlds......."

We have just returned from a week at Club Atlantis – our third visit. It was the quietest I've ever known it and other people staying there also commented on this. This meant that there was never any 'fight' for sun beds and often we had the pool to ourselves. We like Club Atlantis because you get the best of both worlds; it's quiet and 'hassle free' but also very central; if you just want to laze around the wonderful pool area, stroll along the front and eat in nice restaurants or if you want a bit more activity there are numerous excursions and shopping opportunities. There are so many restaurants you could be there a month and never eat in the same place twice – although some are obviously suffering from lack of custom – there were evenings when they appeared to have hardly any customers. The Blue Cactus and Harley's are well worth a visit.

Our apartment was one bedroom with a sofa bed in the lounge; the kitchen and bathroom are well equipped – there was a washing machine in the bathroom which was really useful for washing towels on a daily basis. There was air conditioning and ceiling fans – which are necessity since the temperature hit the 40s while we there. Wi-Fi is apparently available but is limited to individual apartments – if you are renting privately (as we were) don't assume that you will have access - unless the owner gives you the passcode. There are several restaurants with free wi-fi access so we took advantage of this. The apartment is well maintained and comfortable and easily accommodates four adults.

A word of warning – our apartment was on the ground floor and we were sleeping in the lounge, because of the heat we kept the patio doors open with the mesh fly screen pulled across. On the final night I awoke at 5 O'clock to discover my mobile phone, which was charging on the table besides my bed missing and then also discovered my handbag on the patio with all my cash missing – although thank god not my cards. The thief had removed the rubber seal from around the mesh fly screen and simply stepped into the apartment. What is frightening is that I am a light sleeper and I did not hear a thing – although it's probably better that I didn't wake. We lost about £250 in cash, a brand new Galaxy S4 and an iphone. According to the staff this type of crime is on the increase and they seem to think that access is gained through the bungalows in the complex. We have stayed in ground floor apartments before and never felt unsafe; when my son was younger he slept in the lounge. Some would say it was my own fault for not securing and locking the glass doors but in that heat you welcome the breeze and actually why shouldn't you be able to do this? BUT – I would hate this to happen to anyone else and especially since, in the case of families, the children often sleep in the lounge. Keep the doors shut.

This incident was frightening, especially when you know that somebody was actually in the room while you were sleeping, in our case nobody was hurt and phones can be replaced. However, I refuse to let this ruin my impression of Tenerife or Club Atlantis – there is no warning on any of the literature in the apartments about keeping the doors closed and perhaps there should be – we did make the residents committee aware and hopefully they will install more security cameras. I'm including this in the post so that people are aware. This will not stop me returning, I will just be more careful next time.
