The Lanzarote region

In 1987 Lanzarote was declared one of the six universal models of sustainable development by the World Tourism Organization and in 1993 it was declared a Reserve of the Biosphere by UNESCO.
Lanzarote is the most easterly of the seven major Canary Islands and lies in the Atlantic Ocean only some 100 km (60 miles) from the coast of Africa and 1,000 km from the Iberian Peninsula.
The island enjoys an average temperature of 22ºC all year-round due to its advantageous location in the Tropic of Cancer.
Lanzarote has an unusual volcanic terrain and will not disappoint travellers yearning for breathtaking ecotourist attractions. Lanzarote has a staggering 300 volcanoes, extensive lava fields at Timanfaya National Park show the violent volcanic activity that became Isla de Lanzarote.
Amongst the most outstanding attractions are the Art, Culture and Tourist Centres, the world famous artist César Manrique's sensitive response to Lanzarote´s unique geography and people was instrumental in creating a pervasive artistic identity throughout the island.
Explore subterranean volcanic tunnels through lava tubes created by molten lava. Los Jameos del Agua is the most widely visited lava tube in Lanzarote, owing to the sparkling blue lake that lies in its centre and its development by Canarian artist Cesar Manrique in 1968. Volcanoes and frozen lava rivers are not the only places worth seeing in Lanzarote. The paradise island is home to miles of white-sand beaches and gorgeous coastline. Windsurfing, para sailing, scuba diving, and other forms of water sports are some of the most exciting ways to enjoy the refreshing turquoise waters in Lanzarote.
The Playa Blanca area
Playa Blanca is located on the south of the island and still retains the atmosphere of a once small fishing village. This flourishing but tranquil resort is ideal for family and for people looking for relaxation: with its beach borderlined by picturesque restaurants and a shop lined promenade, it is almost always basked in warm sunshine and offers superb views of the mountains and the island of Lobos and Fuerteventura.
From the harbour at Playa Blanca, ferries cross several times each hour to Fuerteventura.
Papagayo, the most gorgeous beaches on the island is a conservation area. Accessed by foot, car or water taxi, beach after beach, six in total, of golden sand and clear water, with some great snorkelling at their rocky edges.
Marina Rubicon has a selection of restaurants, cafes, bars, designer shops and galleries. Here you can also charter a fishing boat or go sailing and on Wednesday and Saturday there is a market.
A walk along the wonderful promenade stretching from Los Colorades to beyond the lighthouse at Pechigura approximately 3.5miles is a great way to see the coast line and all its views.
Timanfaya National Park transformed by the Volcanic eruptions really is sureal, the landscape is totally unique, experience the lunar landscape and views of the volcanoes.

Spacious lounge with comfortable sofas leading off a large kitchen with everything you need. Kitchen leads out onto huge patio with dining room, loungers and another table with chairs. Three bedrooms. Pleasant garden, well maintained and private pool with heating (recommended). A corner spot In a quiet, residential area, with a good view over other properties down to the sea and to the red mountain. Spectacular sun rises and sunsets to observe. Only a short drive to Playa Blanca with a convenient car park, supermarket, pharmacy, post office and other shops. We found the Playa Blanca restaurant to be good value, though we enjoyed eating-in most of the time. A good in-house brochure with lots of information. There is easy access to the pool, so people with small children will need to be vigilant.Lanzarote is a small island easy to drive around - we did and observed the other holiday areas, and were pleased we had chosen Playa Blanca.. So, if you like to get away from the crowds and have a car this is the spot for you unless you wish to be more central, or in the noisy, night-life, crowded areas. |

We stayed in Casa Lovina for one week. It is a new, spacious, well equiped and well maintained villa. The garden and pool are great and the outside dinner area a lovely place where you can sit outside all night. We are very frequent travellers most of the time renting a holiday home and this has been one of the best villas we have stayed in. Also the location is good: quiet, nice view and very close to the beach and village. Excellent value for money. |

Every year in late January we enjoy a week away in Lanzarote, but by far and without exception this year has been the most restful and relaxing time we have ever spent abroad. The directions we received from the owners to get to our villa were simple and straightforward and considering we were travelling at night we had no problem in reaching our destination. The villa itself was spacious, tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean and yet very homely. The jewel in the crown was definitely the heated swimming pool all to ourselves .I would have no hesitation in recommended this Villa

The photos you see really do justice to what you get. We loved our stay in Casa Olivina. We also loved Playa Blanca.
The villa is situated in a gated residence and provides everything you wish for. We can certainly recommend it to anyone!

The villa was as lovely as the photos!
The area is so quiet, even though the villa is in a street of similar properties (we visited at Feb half term). Plenty of space for us (five people) inside and out. A car would be needed as it's quite a walk even to the bus route.
We were very impressed that there were even some dishwasher tablets and washing powder, tea towels etc. There was plenty of helpful info in the villa about where to find shops etc. There were no PS2 games there so take your own, but plenty of films and books etc. The pool was very clean and easily accessible via Roman steps. Playa Blanca is a pretty town with a mix of restaurants to suit all tastes, and lovely sandy beaches. I'd happily recommend this villa to anyone!
Owner Response
"A car is highly recommended and more economical and allows you to explore the Island, the nearest bus stop is a approx 5 - 10 minutes walk."

This was our second stay at Casa Olivana and it was as great the second time as the first. The house is comfortable, well equipped and exceptionally clean.
The location, close to Playa Blanca, but in a quiet residential area, is perfect for us. We also discovered that's it's fairly easy to use the bus to get into Playa Blanca (if you want to have a glass of wine with dinner) and a taxi back to the house is only around €7.
We would highly recommend this house for a relaxing holiday.

The title kind of gives away the fact that we have gone back to Casa Olivina for our second visit so something must have been good first time around. And that was ..... well, everything really! The villa is fastidiously maintained by the owners (Shaun will understand this comment!) and showed absolutely no signs of wear from our last trip two years ago. It remains a beautiful place in which to enjoy your holiday.
Also unchanged is the level of service provided by the owners - there are really no words to say how helpful and considerate they were to us and this played a big part in our decision to return - to know you are going to get support which is second to none.
One thing we did discover which we had previously "written off" because of the look of the place from the main road was La Mulata - a small row of restaurants and bars set down from the main road back into Playa Blanca from the villa just after the hotel. Houses two Italian, one Argentinian and one Greek restaurant(s). The Greek, Sebastyan's, is (in our opinion) probably one of the best restaurants we have ever visited - anywhere! The food is outstanding and the service is amazing - way beyond what you would expect from the looks at the front - and when you get in, the views out over the Atlantic to Fuerteventura whilst you are dining are worth a premium but guess what - the prices are not what you would call excessive given all that we have said above! And they insist that you have a drink on them at the end of your meal and it is all premium spirits - no home grown cheap stuff!!
After you have dined, pop down the stairs in the middle of the block to the bar, Manea - big couches with canopies, swing chairs, cocktails and again the views - very worthwhile.
And in the day, the small sandy beach in front of La Mulata (sea side obviously) makes a great spot for snorkelling - there is also a dive school here which offers reasonable try dives and hence the fish are very tame - take a french stick in with you and see what happens - our 6 yr old was hand feeding about 40 fish!!!
All in all, a second flawless trip to Casa Olivina - we cannot recommend this villa too much or thank the owners enough for all their help and support (we have a young baby on this trip and they even organised a blender for us!!)
A second massive thank you to Shaun, Lorraine and family from Tom and Chris and Mark, Nic, Jack and Alex xxxx

Our family of 5 have just come back from a fantastic week in Lanzarote where we stayed at the lovely, clean and well maintained Casa Olivina. This villa was exactly as described. There is nothing like coming home from a hot day out and getting into "our" own swimming pool where we then spent hours. Everything you could think of was provided. There were games, current dvds, and even a sewing kit to say the least. There was a book providing all the information regarding the villa and in a separate book information on the best places to go, things to do etc in Playa Blanca and the surrounding areas. We were even given advice on how to haggle in the markets - lol. There are loads of beaches but our favourite was the golden sandy Dorada Beach. The only thing that needs updating in the information is the fact that there is no longer a market in Playa Blanca on Wednesday mornings. However there is one on Wednesdays at the Marina Rubicon on a smaller scale than the one in Teguise. This villa comes highly recommended!!!
Recommended for: Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children
Owner's Response: Thanks you for the review, nice to know you enjoyed yourselves.
We are advised the markets are still available in both Playa Blanca (adjacent Sun Park Hotel, On the Femes Road) & Marina Rubicon on Wednesday & Saturday.
The market/stalls at Punta Limones was re-introduced January 2009 after an abscence, and changed to a Friday, we have been advised, this obviously may change again.
When we reprint we will amend the changes, things change so often and then revert back, but it is good to know they are used for what they are designed for and offered a little insight into Lanzarote & Playa Blanca to assist & help guests.
A fantastic family holiday

We are a family of 4 with 2 toddlers (twin boys) and we had a fantastic time whilst staying at Casa Olivina. The villa is clean, well maintained, comfortable and well equipped with all modern conveniences. The pool area was very relaxing being an oasis bordered by volcanic rock and cactus.
The villa itself is located in a quiet residential area just outside town – which is ideal if you’re looking for a quiet get away for the family while still being well located for local and pan-island excursions in the car.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this villa to others.

This was our first visit to Lanzarote and it did not disappoint. Guaranteed sunshine with a light breeze, everywhere was very clean, easy driving on practically empty roads, a short drive from the airport made easy by clear directions from the owners. Playa Blanca offers beaches, restaurants, a few gift shops and supermarkets, pleasant evening strolls along the promenade. It is not too developed and the ratio of local residents to tourists is healthy. Casa Olivina offered excellent, high quality accommodation. Only a short drive away from the tourist centre it was a very private and peaceful haven. We spent our week exactly as we had hoped to; relaxing by and in the pool enjoying the sun and lunchtime siestas, eating out in the evenings with a variety of restaurants to choose from (would recommend several at Marina Rubicon) The location and villa allowed us to have a 'grown-up' away from it all holiday, which isn't bad when you consider we took three children under 10!

We have just enjoyed a great week in Lanzarote. We have stayed in many holiday villas, both in Mainland Spain and the Balearics, and Casa Olivina rates as one of the best. The location is peaceful (if you are looking for noisy nightlife on your doorstep it's not for you) but also well situated for a walk or short bus journey into Playa Blanca or Marina Rubicon.
The garden and pool area are fairly private, and we made full use of both terraces and the pool. The interior of the villa is comfortable and real thought has been put into furnishing it tastefully. The kitchen has everything you need, including a dishwasher.
The information provided about the island was really comprehensive - and useful.
This was our first time in Lanzarote but we will be back, and would be very happy to rent this lovely villa again.

After deciding on a family holiday abroad this Christmas we opted for a villa and Casa Olivinia sounded like the perfect place. We were not disappointed - it was exactly as described on the web site, spotlessly clean, very spacious, modern and fully equipped, with a travel cot and high chair provided for our 14 month old family member. The pool and sun terrace area was enjoyed by all 5 adults and an active toddler. We decided not to hire a car which didn't compromise us at all as the buses were very frequent, reasonably priced and always arrived spot on time. We followed Shaun and Lorraine's recommended company for transfer from and back to the airport which was hassle free. During our stay we found some really good restaurants in Playa Blanca and the Marina area and spent Boxing Day on the lovely beach in Playa Dorada. The local shops and cafe bars situated within walking distance of the villa were well stocked and the staff very friendly and welcoming. A perfect break and the most relaxing Christmas. We would definitely recommend this villa and look forward to going back again. Thank you Shaun and Lorraine

What a lovely holiday. Both the villa and the area of Playa Blanca were wonderful. The villa was in a very quiet area, the pool and patio were glorious with sunshine all day. The villa was particularly well presented, clean, roomy and well equipped with a delightful kitchen. The town of Playa Blanca is very family friendly and has retained charm. The sea front restaurants are particularly neat and well presented. We hired a car both for travel to and from the villa (short drive into Playa Blanca) and to tour the island, we also took in a highly enjoyable trip to the beaches of Papagayo, about 15 minutes drive from the villa. In summary, a really enjoyable break at a lovely holiday villa in a delightful resort.

We found this villa to be one of the best we have stayed. A well appointed spacious villa with all the appliances you should need. Also dvds and games for children not to the mention the great pool. Our 4 year old really came on with his swimming during our week stay. The villa is in a quiet residential area and is very private. The location is ideal, just a short drive to the wonderful Playa Blanca, supermarkets, beaches and Marina etc. There was more than enough information about the villa and the island listing attractions, beaches and restaurants. Good value lunches found in Playa Blanca 2-3 courses approx 10 euro.
All in all would definately return many thanks to Shaun & Lorraine

This beautiful villa is an ideal place to relax and unwind. It has everything you would need to make your holiday complete.
We stayed for 1 week in March 09 as part of my Mother's 80th birthday and were very grateful to Shaun for accommodating our arrival and departure times which were changed by the airline at the last minute.
The villa is very private and we did not feel overlooked by any of the other villas around and is in an ideal location, just a short drive into Playa Blanca.
I would seriously consider returning to this villa, everything about it was perfect!

An exceptional villa, Tastefully decorated and furnished to a high standard, excellent value for money. Stunning views of Mount Roja and the surrounding neighbourhood is peaceful and attractive. It is possible to walk in to Playa Blanca depending on which part you want to get to, it could take 45 mins.
The pool was a real bonus and it was cleaned daily. By far one of the nicest, well equipped and comfortable accommodations we have stayed in and we have stayed in many.
The owners are very friendly and extremely helpful. We had an excellent welcome pack on our arrival.
Playa Blanca is a first class resort it is suitable for couples, families with children and older people. Those looking for lots of night life may prefer a livelier resort.
There are plenty of good restaurants we particularly liked the ones at the Marina Rubicon just outside Playa Blanca.
The weather was excellent we couldn't have asked for better although some may have found it too windy but we didn't mind this.
We would definately return to Casa Olivina in the future.

We spent a relaxing week at Casa Olivina which is situated within easy distance of Playa Blanca. The house was great for us, 2 couples, and the owners provide plenty of information on both the house, including the appliances, and also the area. The garden and pool are private and a wonderful place to spend lots of time.
It was reassuring to know there is a network of people locally too if any further assistance is needed.
We enjoyed our stay on Lanzarote, being the first time we had visited the Canary Islands and this was due in no small part to Shaun & Lorraine and their lovely Villa.

We wanted a holiday where our 2 young kids could swim in a pool without getting bombed or splashed by other kids. We saw this villa and contacted the owners who were really helpful.
Casa Olivina was more than big enough for us. We found it to be extremely clean and finished to a very high standard. It is tastefully decorated and was like a home away from home. Every last little thing was thought of, even books, DVDs and toys for the kids.
Although there is no shallow end in the pool, it is a great heated pool and my husband and I could relax whilst the kids played in the pool - needless to say, our kids loved it and spent hours in it every day.
The garden was also very well maintained with nice sunbeds and a lovely alfresco dining area.
The location was perfect - because it is in a residential area, we found it to be peaceful, quiet and private. We hired a car and would highly recommend this, especially with a young family as this means Playa Blanca is easily accessible, as is the rest of the island. Just about everywhere on the island is good for driving. It's also the best way to get to many of the attractions in Lanzarote - Jardin de Cactus, Montana Roja, Castillo de las Coloradas, markets especially in Teguise, just to name a few. And, above all, parking is easy and usually free.
We spent New Year's Eve in Playa Blanca and saw some amazing fireworks displays on the sea front. And, when the kids couldn't stay awake any longer, we headed back to the villa where we saw the rest of the display from the roof terrace - a truly amazing experience!
The location of the Villa is ideal if you want to have good access to Playa Blanca but have some peace and quiet to relax. And, if you don't fancy driving, then the walk way alongside the sea towards the Marina was well maintained and ideal for promenading.
We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Casa Olivina and hope to return soon.
Thank you Shaun and Lorraine so much for the lovely stay at Casa Olivina Villa!!!
Owner's Response: The pool, is deepest in the centre, both ends and sides are the shallow points, but slope to the centre

Having stayed close to this villa for the previous two years, we were unsure about changing location as the previous villa was excellent. We need not have worried at all!! This villa surpassed our expectations!!!
The location is excellent, the villa was spotless and extremely well maintained and the owners could not do enough to help before we went, whilst we were there and maintained contact after we returned - really helpful, genuine and caring "landlords"!!!! It is highly likely that we will return to this villa at the very soonest possible time, credit crunch allowing!
We hired a car to allow us to get into Plyay Blanca quickly and we absolutely love this resort! Very laid back and family oriented with lots of very good restaurants to choose from! Typico Canario at the end of the promenade furthest from the harbour is excellent as is Spices, the new curry restaurant, and the Chinese closest to the harbour, which piles the food on your table and the staff are lovely! If you are missing a full english breakfast, have a tips to Lani's snack bar!
Shaun (owner) provided lots of useful hints and tips and we had some fun fishing off the rocks close to the lighthouse, at his recommendation. The villa has lovely gardens surrounding it very nicely done in the Canarian theme with crushed volcanic rock, palms and birds of paradise - really relaxing and very pretty.
The pool was a godsend for anyone who likes water - just the right size and heated to a very comfortable temperature! We were greeted by a welcome pack with everything you could need to get you going, and there were some very well thought out and presented "guides" to the villa (how to use the tv/sky/stereo etc.), the locality and the island in general. Extremely thoughtful.
We have been to Lanzarote quite a few times over the past six years and this was the best! And the others times have been excellent!! We did one new thing this year and that was a day out at the water park at Arrecife. There seem to be mixed reviews about the place and yes, it is a little jaded, but if you like water parks, a few trips down the three main slides and you can overlook the shortcomings!! The water is not heated but we all soon adjusted.
All in all, we would rate our holiday this year 11 out of 10 with Casa Olivina and the owners playing a VERY BIG part in this rating - we simply could not fault them or the villa - a massive thank you from Nic, Mark and Jack, Tom, Chris and Thomas x
