The Lanzarote region
The Island of Lanzarote is situated just 70 miles off the coast of Africa and is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. Lanzarote is 60km long and 20 km wide, making it the fourth largest of the Canary island.
Lanzarote has a mild dry climate with average temperatures throughout the year between 21 and 29 degrees and the normal water temperature of the Atlantic Ocean ranges between 19 degrees in winter and 23 degrees in summer and autumn. Annual rainfall is just 140mm (5.5 inches). This makes Lanzarote the perfect year-round destination for water sport or just relaxing by the pool.
The island of Lanzarote is the most unusual and surprising in the Canary Island archipelago. The island offers the visitor a wide variety of landscapes and attractions. Declared a Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO in 1993, Lanzarote is made up of particularly beautiful landscapes.
The volcanoes of the Timanfaya National Park, the La Geria vineyards, the Papagayo beaches with their golden sand, the cactus fields in Mala and the impressive Risco de Famara crag with its long beach stretching out below it.
The landscape of Lanzarote is the result of man’s talent to face the hard geographical and climatic conditions over the years. Agriculture and fishing have been carried out with respect for the environment, and have become a cultural and landscape identity.
A real must for the visitor are the art and culture centres, scattered all over the island. Mostly built by the famous Lanzarote artist, César Manrique, who was an expert in highlighting and conserving the charm and temperament of the island, they are a fascinating amalgamation of natural beauty and intelligent architecture.
Despite the Volcanic nature of the island, Lanzarote has several beautiful white beaches such as at Playa Blanca, Playa Dorada and Papagayo.
Playa Blanca / Villas Del Sur area
The area surrounding the villa has many interesting places to visit and things to do.
* The area borders the Papagayo National Park with its coastal walks and world famous natural white sandy beaches.
* The coastal promenade starts near the villa at the El Pueblo shopping centre at Los Colorades and runs for nearly 9 kilometre passing by the Marina Rubicón, Playa Dorada beach, the seafront restaurants of Playa Blanca, the main harbour with its ferry terminal to Fuerteventura and onwards to the lighthouse on the south western tip of Lanzarote.
* The Marina Rubicón is surrounded by a selection of luxury shops, exquisite restaurants and lively bars - which are all based on the typical architecture of Lanzarote. Stroll by its bridges, balconies, swimming pools, squares, alleys and gardens and you will discover a truly charming world. The sports marina has 400 moorings and a sailing and diving school.
Marina Rubicón offers every possibility to practice sport and enjoy the sea, sun and atmosphere around the harbour. From a tennis or paddle tennis match to sailing, windsurfing or diving course, you can enjoy your favourite sport or learn something new in the impeccable facilities at the marina. Do some exercise, sign up for a fantastic trip on the 'Rubicat' catamaran, rent a kayak to explore the coast, relax beside the pool, or, just, browse in the boutiques, shops and art gallery along the promenade around the harbour.
* These are the main leisure facilities available at Marina Rubicón:
Rubicat: An exciting trip on a luxury catamaran.
Rubisail: The island's state-of-the-art sailing and windsurfing school and 1 and 2 people kayaks for rent.
Rubicon Fishing: Boat rental for fishing or scuba and excursions
Subcat: Mini Submarine trips
Marina Rubicón Diving Centre: Discover the fantastic underwater world around Lanzarote. (www.rubicondiving.com).
Charter: Chartering Bareboat and skippered sailing
Tennis: Impeccable tennis court overlooking the sea.
Paddle tennis: Two paddle tennis courts with artificial grass surface.
Swimming pool: Freshwater swimming pool with a large private sun-bathing area.
The Timanfaya National Park (Fire Mountain) is also close by, with its impressive volcanoes and lava fields.
* Ferry Crossings to Fuerteventura
The ferries to Fuerteventura leave from the old Harbour in Playa Blanca. There are two companies providing service, Fred Olsen and Armas Ferries. It is well worth a visit to Fuerteventura and the town of Corralejo, if you are here in Playa Blanca for any length of time.
* Lanzarote boasts an abundance of unique fiestas and festivals that are well worth visiting, virtually all of these events are religious in origin – but you don´t have to be religious to get involved and these come second only to Fiesta in Rio in south america. These are the biggest and best events and these are augmented by national holidays and more localised fiestas in specific villages and towns throughout the year.

New Year’s Celebrations - New Year in Lanzarote is fun, easy-going and tradition-related. On New Year’s Eve, an occasion even more celebrated than Christmas, Lanzaroteños count every stroke of midnight while drinking cava, the local version for champagne, and eating 12 grapes (one for each stroke).
How to get there
* Getting to Lanzarote is relatively easy. Fly from your local airport to Arrecife airport - Playa Blanca is 24 kilometres to the south by road, a journey time of about 25 minutes.
Budget flights are available from nearly all of the major UK airports and depending on where you live the following airlines will get you there.
Globespan, Monarch, Easyjet, Air Europa, British Midland, Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Fly, JET2 and First Choice Airways
* The island is served by all the International Car Hire companies and many local companies as well. We can personally recommend Cabrera Medina and they have an office at the airport. +34 928511126 or visit their website - www.cabreramedina.com.
Alternatively a search on the internet for 'lanzarote car hire' will produce a comprehensive list companies.
