The Lanzarote region
Lanzarote is the most easterly of The Canary Islands, and is situated around 80 miles off the coast of west Africa. It is the fourth largest of the islands and is only 37 miles long and 12 miles at its widest point.
Being situated close to the equator, and on the same latitude as The Bahamas, Lanzarote enjoys some of the best sunny weather available within 4 hours flying time of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Average temperatures are around 23 degrees and the sun is year round (it's not unusual to spend New Years Day on the beach !). In reality, there is a constant breeze which makes the weather very pleasant and definitely recommended for sun worshippers, but a high sun factor cream is a must.
The Island is largely volcanic and there is some very dramatic scenery that resembles the surface of Mars ! The landscape was formed in the 1700's from a series of volcanic eruptions that lasted 2000 days. The Island is now largely dormant, although it is worth a trip to the Timanfaya National Park where they cook a barbecue over the heat of the volcano.
Despite most tourists heading straight for the beaches of the resorts, it is worth heading out on a trip to see some of the fantastic scenery the Island has to offer. Here are some of our favourites.
El Golfo - is half of an eroded volcanic crater, filled with sea-water rich with green algae. It is a very dramatic sight when contrasted with the black sand on the western shores of the Island. El Golfo is situated around 7km north of the resort of Playa Blanca.
Timanfaya National Park - is a must see, the closest you will get to the feeling of standard on Mars. On entering the park you will be given a demonstration of how hot it is just a short distance under your feet. The guide will create a mini geyser before your eyes by pouring water down a bore hole. There is a short coach trip around the park where you will view the incredible landscape caused by multiple eruptions, followed by a trip to the "El Diablo" restaurant where you can eat a barbecue cooked from the heat of the volcano.
Jameos del Agua - a cave formed by the volcanic eruptions of thousands of years ago. The celebrated Lanzarote artist, Cesar Manrique, turned the caves into a musical auditorium capable of seating 600 people. In addition there are gardens, restaurants, walks and a swimming pool. Most recently, the caves were used as the backdrop to the movie Los Abrazos starring Penelope Cruz. Below the Jameos del Agua are the...
Cueva de los Verdes (Green Caves) - a volcanic cave formed by molten lava and stretching for 6km. The caves are 15m in diameter in places and the lower half has been turned into a dramatic venue as a concert hall. There is a secret to the caves, and only those who visit the caves will see it. Previous visitors are sworn to secrecy !!!
Guinate Tropical Park - is set in 15 acres of lush surroundings and features many species of tropical birds, reptiles, fish and animals. There are parrot shows for the children to enjoy and a spectacular underwater view of the penguin enclosure.
The Lanzarote Aquarium - is widely regarded as the largest of its kind in The Canary Islands. Children and adults alike will be left amazed by the sheer variety of marine life on display. For those with a diving qualification, there is also a large pool where you can swim with the sharks !!!
The Playa Blanca / Parque del Rey area
Playa Blanca (meaning "White Beach") is the most southerly resort on the island of Lanzarote, which is itself situated just 80 miles off the coast of Africa. Surrounded by numerous golden beaches and azure seas, and enjoying almost year round sunshine with temperatures averaging 21°C (72°F), this really is the place to enjoy a family holiday or a sunshine getaway for couples.
Being a relatively new tourist destination, the resort has been able to develop based upon the best ideas of others. For example, whilst there are places to eat, drink and dance until the early hours, there are no mega-nightclubs with hundreds of people pouring on to the streets at closing time; there are plenty of these 25 miles away in the resort of Puerto del Carmen. Developers have also chosen to build the luxurious Marina Rubicon here, surrounded by its designer boutiques and eateries overlooking the yachts, it definitely brings an upmarket feel to the resort.
The main shopping area is in the centre of town and is one third pedestrianised. Here you will find shopping outlets for a wide range of clothes, electrical goods, alcohol and cigarettes. On a practical note, you will also find many cashpoints, supermarkets, a chemist and a lots of places to eat. Not forgetting that our office is also situated here!
Running parallel to the high street, just one block away is the sea-front boardwalk. The boardwalk in Playa Blanca runs the full length of the resort (5 miles) and passes numerous beaches, Marina Rubicon, the harbour and too many restaurants to mention. This is an ideal place for walking/jogging, is wheelchair friendly, and for the most part is populated by restaurants and cafes, plus a few shops. The sea views here are beautiful during the day, but an evening meal is a must to fully appreciate the views of the orange sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.
For those of you who are quite happy to remain in the resort, you'll be glad to know that car hire is no longer a necessity in any of our villas. There is now a bus service that runs back and forth across the resort and all our villas are a short walk away from any of the bus stops. Drop us an email and we'll send a copy of the bus timetable with a map of the stops, the service only costs 1.15€ per trip and runs every half-hour from 6:30am to 10pm (7 days a week). Of course, if you do want to be within walking distances of the town and beaches, we have lots of villas to suit.
