The Lanzarote region
Lanzarote is the most easterly of the seven major Canary Islands - lying just sixty miles off the coast of Africa and eighteen hundred miles south of England. The island is just forty miles from top to bottom and only fourteen miles wide. It enjoys an average temperature of 22 degrees all the year round due to its advantageous position in the Tropic of Cancer.
Arrecife is the capital and has it's international airport only minutes away to the south and the cruise port to the north. Timanfaya National Park, on the western coast, has the most fantastic volcanic scenery. Great care has been taken in preserving the island's historical and artistic heritage.
Not long ago Playa Blanca was just a tiny fishing village and now a beautiful resort. Immensely popular with the more elderly holiday makers because of the long and relatively flat promenade it offers wonderful views across the bay to the Papagayo beaches and over to Fuerteventura. Papagayo is a protected area and completely unspoilt but it is easily reached by regular boat trips from the harbour.
There are many, many restaurants and bars in which to relax and enjoy the fantastic weather and wonderful views. Go into the information centre at the harbour to get details of all of the different trips that you can take to discover the island without having to hire a car. Playa Blanca has three beaches off the promenade.
