The Lanzarote region
Lanzarote is the "Jewel in the Crown" of the archipelago of the Canary Islands, Palm trees, golden sandy beaches set in a lunar landscape of unearthly beauty, luxury developments, vineyards and volcanoes: this is Lanzarote. Lanzarote is very different to the other Canary Islands, and this is mainly due to two influences, Firstly the ancient volcanic eruptions that shaped the island, and secondly; the works of the great Canarian Architect and artist Cesar Manrique, whose influence created the island we see today. Together with its almost-perfect year-round climate and outstanding reputation for service and luxury, Lanzarote ensures an unique holiday experience.
The places that you MUST SEE, by order in nearby to your home, are:
TIMANFAYA, FIRE MOUNTAINS, Fifty-one, square kilometres of volcano and lava fields have been turned into a National Park and the island,s most popular tourist attraction, If, you´ve never experienced a coach-load of people hushed into silence by the awe-inspiring beauty of their surroundings, this is for you. Park rangers will also demonstrate the heat of the volcanoes, and there is a restaurant where meat is grilled by the heat of the earth´s molten core.
EL GOLFO, The view of the green lake and black sand of El Golfo is one of the most stunning on the island, and another must on any tourist itinerary. The village of El Golfo itself features restaurants famous for their fresh fish.
LOS HERVIDEROS, "The boiling pots" are where the sea has eroded into the volcanic coast. Visitors can peer over the edge and see the sheer force of the ocean as it hammers into the rocks, leaping many metres into the air.
JAMEOS DEL AGUA, A prehistoric eruption created natural caves with bubbles of air in the lava (named Jameos). Inside a beautiful lake is connected to the sea from underground, and is home to a rare species of blind albino crab. Cesar Manrique created a setting of artistically arranged flora with a complex of restaurant, coffee-bar, and a concert cave with spectacular acoustics.
CUEVAS DE LOS VERDES, Go underground and see astonishing natural galleries, stalactites and an unforgettable optical illusion. This journey through a perfectly preserved volcanic tunnel is one you won't forget in a life.
MIRADOR DEL RIO, yet another of Manrique´s creations. From the top of a cliff, hundreds of metres above sea level, is a perfectly concealed look-out point. The views over the Island of La Graciosa are breathtaking.
Other places highly recommended, Monument of the Campesino, Cesar Manrique´s house, Haria Village, The Cactus Garden, La Graciosa.
Beaches, PAPAGAYO BEACH (the must between the beaches), Playa Dorada (also near), Playa Grande (in Puerto del Carmen 7 km. long), Famara (specially for windsurfers), Playa Matagorda (aeronautic lovers, lay on the sand while the aeroplanes fly 50 feet over you), Janubio, Playa Jablillo, Playa Chica & Caleton Blanco.
The Playa Blanca / Las Coloradas area
Ten years ago a tiny fishing village, PLAYA BLANCA, on the south coast, is now a flourishing but tranquil resort with a beautiful beach bordered by a picturesque restaurant-lined promenade. The small harbour is used by ferries sailing to Fuerteventura the Fred Olsen Express car ferry makes the 20 minute crossing six times daily.
Close by along the headland to the east several paths lead to the magnificent PAPAGAYO BEACHES, composed of several small bays and coves, many consider these golden sands to be the most beautiful in Spain.
MARINA RUBICON:
This harbour at Playa Blanca combines the most modern and well-equipped docks for sea-going yachts with the olde-world charm of traditional island architecture housing amenities and facilities on the shoreline including an art gallery. There are also tennis and paddle courts, or you can sample the wide variety of sea excursions ranging from diving, sailing, canoeing and catamaran .
On certain evenings there is various types of live music (look out for advertisements locally) and on Wednesday and Saturday mornings there is a small market at the Marina Rubicon.
Nightlife, Marea Lounge Terrace, is a perfect place to go, and you can find several good restaurants and chill-out bars in Marina Rubicon.
