Villa Braos is located in the picturesque village of Rodakino -South Crete with view along the valley to the sea. It is an ideal choice for relaxing and pleasant holidays away from the noisy resorts, combining view to the sea and the mountains.

The House,is located at the edge of the village of Rodakino with view along the valley to the sea.

The village of Rodakino at Crete's south coast is a rather quiet place even during main season. There is a super market, a kafenion, a hotel bar, some pensions and a lot ...of nature.

The nearby village of Plakias, in contrast, offers everything Rodakino doesn't: bars, more tavernas, rent cars, shops, doctor and pharmacy. The usual civilisation isn't far away, just in case.

Beaches and Surroundings :The beach road is winding 2km downhill and turns right at the beach, continuing along the coast until it ends at a taverna.

At Koraka Beach in South Crete ,sunbeds and umbrellas are available during the season. Further away at Agia Marina beach , behind the last taverna there's beach only, free of obstacles.

Walking east there are further bays and beaches reachable only by foot, the village's harbour lies on the way.

About this location

The Rethymnon Prefecture region

Crete is Greece's largest and most southerly island and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean. The distance between Crete and the mainland, as well as the fertility of its land, have made the Island independent for many centuries. Over time Crete developed a culture of its own, with distinct language and traditions. The island separates the Aegean from the Libyan Sea, marks the boundary between Europe and Africa.

Crete is mostly mountainous, with a large mountain chain running east to west. Majestic mountains rise in its centre. Its plateaux are split by deep gorges and end up in fertile valleys. The scenery is constantly changing. In one place harsh and barren, in another wooded and gentle. Its villages smothered in greenery: Olive trees, orange groves, vineyards, and vegetable market gardens.

Old stone farmhouses, monasteries and villages perched on mountain ridges, castles and chapels forgotten on steep slopes. Shores lined with forbidding rocks, often inaccessible, but also lots of endless sandy or pebbly beaches!

The town of Rethymno (39 kms). A travel in time as if time had never passed... Rethymno represents a place of contrasts, boasting a long and remarkable history as well as untouched places of natural beauty and living traditions. This small Mediterranean town will enchant you with its centre dating from the period of the Renaissance, its fortress and museums as well as its beaches.

Rethymno maintains even today the authenticity and the customs of the island alive. Moreover, it is one of the most significant tourist resorts in Greece with a variety of natural and cultural leisure activities, which will satisfy even the most demanding visitors.

Plakias

The village of Rodakino is situated in the south of Crete on the road between Frangokastelo and Plakias. Not much further is "Korakas-beach", a 350 m stretch of beach. The most famous resort of South Crete, the village of Plakias is 12 km away. The distance from Rethymnon town is 39 km, from Heraklion airport 120km, and from Chania airport is 100 km.

There is a bus connection with Rethymnon twice a day. The village is divided into Ano (high) Rodakino and Kato (lower) Rodakino. Both of the villages are quiet and traditional and seem to sleep in their green surroundings. There are a couple of Kafenions here, but not much more. From Kato Rodakino there is a road, about 2 kilometer long, to the beach of Korakas.

The surrounding area is covered with silver-green olive-trees and the products of the region are famous such as olive-oil, honey and local cheese. In the village the visitor can find a taxi station, and a gasoline station. A doctor is available for medical emergencies on the village of Plakias ( 12 kms). All the roads in this area are curvy, sometimes a bit narrow, but they are good. A kind of ravine (riverbed) divides the village into two, and there are bridges to connect the two parts of Rodakino to eachother.

There are several beaches with names like Aghia Marina beach, Kastellos beach, Polirizos Beach and Korakas Beach. The beaches of Rodakino are some of the last hidden - undiscovered - treasures in south of Crete. There are some accommodations offering rooms and there are a couple of tavernas but it remains very quiet. The beaches are beautiful and sandy with some pebbles. The large beach in the east ( Korakas) has some sunbeds and umbrellas for rent and two tavernas nearby.

Rodakino played its own role during the centuries, in the fighting of the Cretans against all the invaders. The village was totally destroyed during the Venetian occupation, with only one resident escaping to Peloponnese in Greece . Years after the destruction he returned to the site of the village, and he rebuilt it.

In Kourkoylo one of the quarters of the village the first rising of the flag of the revolution against the Turks was raised on May 24th 1821.

During the second World War the kidnapped German general Craipe was sent away from the bay of Korakas to the Middle East.

Highlights of the area are : Preveli Palm beach, the historic monastery of Preveli, Frangokastello castle, Samaria gorge, Chora Sfakion village, Eleftherna , Phaestos and Gortyna archaeological-sites, the Krioneritis Mountain, Aghia Galini village , Kotsifou and Kourtalioti gorges the Triopetra abd Agios Pavlos beach. Tavernas, cafes and small shops are at nearby villages while the inhabitants are courteous and hospitable. Various religious festivals are celebrated in the villages, along with traditional fiestas and cultural events during summer!
