The Rethymnon Prefecture region
Once home to legendary Kings and mythical characters, Crete holidays have now become one of the best destinations for stunning beaches, beautiful countryside and a whole range of activities and attractions to enjoy.
Plenty of Activities in Crete
With its crystal clear warm waters, hours of sun and calming sea breeze, Crete’s beaches are the perfect spot to enjoy an abundance of water sports. There is also plenty of opportunity for fabulous scuba diving and snorkeling around the island.
If water sports are not for you, why not saddle up and explore the island and its idyllic countryside on horseback. Hidden paths, trails and ancient donkey routes really do allow you to see Crete at its best.
The island’s rugged peaks, sheer cliffs and deep gorges also provide the perfect surrounding for the more adventurous to engage in more vigorous activities such as mountain biking, rock climbing and canoeing.
Walking the Samaria Gorge, the longest gorge in Europe, is definitely one of the best things to do in Crete, and the most exhilarating. The scenery is spectacular, and while it's hot and tiring to cover the 11 miles (18kms), it can be done by anyone who's reasonably fit
Why not cool off from the extreme heat in Crete’s largest and most entertaining water parks; the Limnoupolis?
Attractions in Crete
This ancient island is drowning in history and mythology, which is retained and brought to life by the stunning archaeological sites and medieval harbour towns.
The impressive remains found at the Minoan Palaces of Knossos and Phaestos, and the fascinating artifacts in the museum in Heraklion really help Crete maintain its history.
Crete’s cuisine and nightlife
Crete’s cuisine is extremely similar to mainland Greece focusing on the Mediterranean palette. Dining venues are mainly clustered in the main towns and beach resorts serving an assortment of simple and fresh dishes with favourites including the classic Greek salads, seafood specialties, moussaka and ‘saligaria stifado’
Endless stretches of nightlife, Crete is often referred to as one of the Greek ‘party islands’. Tavernas, bars, nightclubs and discos are the main attractions in Crete with the party strips in Malia and Hersonissos usually drawing in the younger crowds for a memorable night.
For the older tourist, head to Chania or Rethymnon’s Venetian harbour to enjoy fantastic live music and relax in the water evening air. Or join the locals for their 'volta', a leisurely stroll along the waterfront or ride in a horse-drawn carriage before settling down to a sundowner or dinner.
Miles of soft sand gorgeously warm waters- Crete’s beaches are at the top of the league. Whatever your mood, you will find the perfect beach to spend your day.
If it’s a vibrant and busy beach vibe you are after then head to Malia beach, which mixes its soft sand with funky beach bars and daring water sports.
Aghios Nikolaos and Rethymnon Beach offer more of a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of water sports, resort shops and restaurants leading up to picturesque harbours.
Crete is paradise for those who enjoy the great outdoors and filling their day with a variety of activities and attractions, from sightseeing magnificent historic ruins to testing your balance windsurfing.
If you want a peaceful, relaxing holiday in a fairly traditional Greek resort with a lovely mile long beach, plenty of good places to eat and drink, then go! If you want a loud brash resort with nightclubs and fast food then you won't like Plakias.
You can still see the fishing village that Plakias was before tourism took over, luckily its been done in the nicest possible way. The resort is very laid back and you can find the day slipping by all too easily while you just potter about. When you tire of the lovely beach (best bit is the naturist beach at the far end of the resort) then there is plenty of walking to be done, especially if you're armed with Lance Chilton's book.
Plenty of amazing untouched and private or even for nudism beaches with blue waters are in walking or cycling distance (Souda Beach, Ammoudi Beach, Damnoni Beach).
Famous Preveli Monastery and Beach is in approx. 15 minutes drive away.
You'll be spoilt for choice for food - all the restaurants seem to be good but for what its worth, favourites are Kri Kri (especially the pizzas!) and Muses (particularly good for vegetarians). For pre-dinner drinks (or after dinner, or early afternoon or anytime really) you can't beat On the Rocks, fantastic Greek craft beer and cocktails in a perfect spot.
