The Crete region
The Island of Crete is the largest of all the Greek Islands and is understandably a popular travel destination, it has everything. It is also the southernmost island in Europe nestling in the Aegean Sea.
Western Crete is extremely beautiful and perfect for exploring, you will find quiet coves and hidden beaches, magnificent snow capped Mountains where you will come across invigorating mountain villages, a coast with so many beautiful beaches and rocky inlets, beautiful towns and charming villages and harbours.
You can explore the ruins of the Minoan civilisation and enjoy the excellent Cretan cuisine.
Because the landscape is so rich and varied it is perfect for walking and all kinds of sports with its mountains, planes and beaches or you can just relax and enjoy the fantastic Cretan climate sunbathing on this southernmost Greek Island and bathed in clear sunlight much of the year, this climate is one of the best in Europe. The crystal clear seas, the wildlife, the ever present scents of wild herbs and flowers, the fresh fruit from the local markets and the excellent olive oil produced in Crete, the genuine hospitality of the people and the tradition of welcoming visitors make a trip to western Crete a truly unforgettable experience.
Plaka, Crete area
Plaka. Villa Emilia sits just inside the Village boundary in an excellent elevated position overlooking Souda Bay and the pretty Plaka Village with its whitewashed narrow streets and its abundance of bougainvillea and geraniums.
The views in Plaka of the White Mountains and Souda Bay with its deep blue sea are absolutely stunning. Plaka was one of the villages featured in Zorbas the Greek and is a traditional Greek working village with a quiet friendly charm and it is understandably very popular with tourists.
There are three excellent restaurants and a couple of café / bars where you can enjoy a drink and a snack with a further restaurant and a couple of café / bars on the outskirts of the village. To eat at the village square is a delight in the evenings, the friendly and warm ambience really make it a memorable experience. Some visitors choose to dine nowhere else in the evening but Plaka square.
There are also a couple of minimarkets which stock just about all you will need for your stay.
Almirida. Almirida is just a few minutes drive or 15 minutes walk from Plaka and is a lovely village with golden sands and a small and pretty fishing harbour at the end of the beach. The beach has the blue flag award and the sea is shallow and shelves very gently so is really safe for children and because the sea is shallow it warms quickly in the sun. The Beach is lined with several excellent Tavernas and a fish restaurant where you can enjoy the excellent Cretan cuisine. You will also find more shops, a few minimarkets, a bakery, several café / bars and a taxi rank if you decide not to walk back to Plaka.
Kalives Kalives is the next village along the coast from Almirida and is a larger working village than Almirida with some excellent beach side tavernas and boasts long golden sands and here a pretty but icy cold stream from the mountain melt waters flowing into the sea. You can often see the trout from the bridge in Kalives. You will find banks supermarkets and most of what you ever could need while on holiday.
Kokkino Horio Also featured in Zorbas the Greek, here you can visit and buy souvenirs at the Glass Blowing Factory
You can try the Octopus Restaurant in a secluded lagoon just off the road from Drapanos to the quaint village of Kefelas. The sea here is so blue it looks unreal.
Chania is a MUST, a highly recommended day out which can be reached easily by car or public transport. Chania has an atmosphere of its own from the Agora indoor market selling herbs and spices, meats and fish which you can try before you buy in the small cafes, olive oil and much more. Take a walk around the Venetian harbour and have a drink or a meal at one of the many tavernas lining the harbour and just watch the world go by, this area also comes alive at night and is well worth the visit. You may just decide to shop for souvenirs in the busy town centre or take a walk round the old town with its old buildings and narrow cobbled streets. Saturday is Market day and the busy open air market is well worth visiting. Here you can buy fruit, veg fish, herbs, cheeses, clothes, materials and just about anything else you can think of, even rabbits.
Samaria Gorge If you fancy a breathtaking walk down Europes longest gorge then try the Samaria Gorge, Start the walk early in the morning high in the white mountains on the Omolos Plateau and descend 800 spectacular metres to the Libyan Sea at Agia Roumeli. The gorge takes around 4 to 6 hour and the trip can be arranged locally.
Limnoupolis Water Park is just a short drive through Chania and has many water rides and games, a Jacuzzi, pool bar, café etc, an experience the kids will love. It can also be reached by public transport from Chania.
Georgeopolis Georgioupolis, Is worth a visit if you want somewhere a bit more lively. It used to be a sleepy little fishing village but its long sandy beach has made it popular and it is now quite busy although the centre of Georgioupolis still has the feel of a small resort. The attractive square is lined with shops and tavernas.
Lake Kournas Lake Kournas is 3 kms inland from Georgioupolis is the only freshwater lake in the whole of Crete. This makes it a popular "exotic" weekend destination for the Cretans. The landscape in Kournas, especially if you pick a grey day, is reminiscent of a mountain lake in the Alps rather than being in Crete. Well worth a visit on a weekday.
There is so much to see and do in the area and all the details are included in our guest manual.

Guestbook for VILLA EMILIA
Hi Dawn and Norman, We had a brilliant time in Plaka.Your villa is Fantastic,We just couldn't fault it,the cleanliness, the layout, the facilities, and the garden terrace was very pretty.I left comments to this effect in the guest book. What a great location, and already we are missing the view of the bay, the mountains and the beautiful sunsets. Aug 08.
Dear Dawn and Norman, Just wanted to say what a marvellous time we had at your wonderful villa. What a great location it is in,we loved the views over Souda Bay. The boys adored the pool which we had to ourselves most days. We spent most days on the beach which as you said is great for children.we wrote in the guest book to say how much we enjoyed our holiday. We would love to visit the villa again July 08.
Hi Dawn and Norman Just to let you know we had a wonderful time at your villa in Plaka, everything was perfect. Evidently there was a forest fire and the firemen turned off all the water, but with your big deposito we were never out of water. Anyway thank you again for letting us use your villa it was really a lovely holiday. June 2008
Hi Dawn and Norman, We had the most enjoyable 2 weeks in your lovely villa. The village life, the views, the lovely food we enjoyed, the friendliness of the people, the villages we discovered exploring the mountains, the fantastic weather Everything was just perfect.Thank you so much. May 08.
Hi, Just a belated note to say how much we enjoyed our stay in Villa Emilia, and Crete generally. The weather picked up and we did brave the pool for a very short swim! We spent some lovely afternoons/evenings in Plaka enjoying food and drink. The villa was excellent and the views were great, especially spotting submarines and aircraft carriers! Thanks again April 2008
The views from upper balcony are splendid, great to relax with a beer in the early evening! The Villa was very well equipped and well maintained. Been to Greece 20+ times, this is one of the best villas we have had - August 2007.
I thought the villa was nice homey place. The views were fantastic and lovely to draw.Personally i loved the pool. It was a great place to have fun, me and my brother came friends with our neighbours, we played with their ball and their sinking thingmebobs-Megan (aged 9).
The garden and villa were excellent especially the bouganvillea- (Mum of age 9) Aug 07.
Brilliant !!! (dad of age 9).
An excellent villa -the pool was brilliant especially at night when it was lit. We loved it. We enjoyed Almyrida at night. Would recommend the Museum of Crete in Askifou, a truly unique experience.Liminopolous Waterpark is a fantastic place to visit - 07.
We have thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Crete and will miss the mountains and the blue, blue sea when we return to the UK tomorrow. Villa Emilia has been a very comfortable home for 2 weeks. We love the private patio area particularly as we have been able to keep an eye on the children at the pool whilst relaxing at a safe distance-. The villa itself is very well equipped and thought the welcome groceries a really nice touch. A beautiful island we will be back...July 2007
