Home description
We are proud to be the exclusive agents in 2009 for Atlantis House, an absolutely charming traditional stone village house which has been renovated with great care to produce a beautiful holiday home. Many original features have been kept including stone arches, high vaulted ceilings made from local cypress wood, nooks built into the walls, and inset doors and windows surrounded by stone. The completely private courtyard is shaded by a pergola that is covered in vines, which are resplendent with grapes in the summer. The pool terrace is paved with a creamy coloured local stone, has wonderful views to The White Mountains and the olive covered valley, and is fully equipped with outdoor furniture (as are the courtyard and upstairs terrace) including a BBQ, a dining table and director’s chairs, sun-beds and umbrellas. On a hot summer’s day more shade is available under the grapevine covered pergola, the mature mulberry tree or the lemon tree, which is also useful for that slice of lemon for your gin and tonic!
Located on one of Plaka’s quaint narrow backstreets, Atlantis House is surprisingly private, despite being only three minutes walk from the 3 well stocked general stores and excellent tavernas on the pretty village square, and 15 minutes walk from the sandy beaches in Almyrida. Surrounded by a stone wall which has mulberry trees planted along it on the street side, and with a high blue/green wooden gate and fencing, you can relax in your own little world. The master bedroom has lovely views to the sea and beach in Almyrida as well as all along the Souda Bay coastline, and the upstairs terrace has views across the old village houses to the sea and the Akrotiri Peninsula.
Atlantis House has all of the romantic old world charm that you would expect from such a property but also many modern facilities that you would not, including; a fully fitted, well equipped kitchen, a washing machine and tumble drier, a large fully tiled corner bath that is big enough for two, satellite TV, a DVD player, a stereo with a CD player, Mediterranean Blue aluminium doors and window frames, and air conditioning units in the bedrooms. A/C is not necessary in the downstairs living area thanks to the thick stone walls which keep it cool. For the cooler nights at the start and end of the season there is a wood burning stove in the living room and the a/c units also double up as heaters. The water is heated by either solar panel or a back-up immersion heater.

The Crete region
Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.
As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.
Atlantis House is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and handmade ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding handmade leather bargains.
The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, bird watching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.
Plaka, Crete area
The main square in Plaka is only 170m from Atlantis House and is still very much the focal point of village life. There are lovely shady mulberry trees under which the locals sit to watch the world go by whilst enjoying a delicious meal or even just an ice cold frappe. Plaka was one of the original village sets for the film “Zorba the Greek” and it still has quaint whitewashed houses and narrow streets leading off from the square (Atlantis House is situated on one of these streets). The modern outskirts of the village have expanded recently as have the facilities, which now include 3 excellent tavernas, 3 well stocked mini markets, a sweet shop, and 5 cafes.
The lovely village of Almyrida is only 900m from Atlantis House, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 4 excellent tavernas, 9 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 5 mini-markets, 3 gift shops, an off-license, and the Villas Crete Holidays Tourist office that is owned and run by Frankie Miles. Frankie will also be your local advisor offering 24/7 assistance if needed. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans.
A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 35 minutes away by car.
Cooking classes and wine tasting set at a local winery can be taken by those of you who are interested. Guided walks led by experts in mountaineering and/or flora and fauna can also be arranged. For those of you who prefer to venture out on your own, a free copy of the guide book "Crete on the Road" by Frankie Miles comes with every villa (as featured in the November 2008 issue of "Greece Magazine"). The book contains detailed directions to many well known and hidden sites, opening times and prices for all attractions, taverna recommendations, and the only existing map of the National Highway showing the exits and entrances.
How to get there
An easy 35 minute drive from Chania Airport.
** Many other flight options from Heraklion Airport which is a 1 hour and 45 minute drive along the pretty coastal highway.
** Cheap flights available by many companies including EasyJet into Heraklion Airport.
** Other good flight options provided by Thomas Cook, Monarch, First Choice and Thompson (among others).
** Excellent value car hire provided by the villa agent.
** Comfortable local taxis (usually Mercedes) can be booked for you by the villa agent.

Further details indoors: The wooden furniture throughout the house has been made locally, as was the pretty wrought iron double bed in the triple bedroom, whilst the king size bed in the master bedroom came from the U.K. The bed-settees in the living room provide sleeping for an additional 2 persons if required. Colourful rugs, curtains, paintings, ornaments and candle holders all add to the extremely attractive interior. The owners have thoughtfully supplied an ample stock of videos, DVD’s and books, as well as a Scrabble board game for your enjoyment.
Further details outdoors: There are many sitting out areas including the front courtyard which is shaded by either a large mulberry tree or a pergola that is covered in vines that are dripping with grapes in the summer months, and is equipped with a BBQ and a dining table and cushioned chairs. There is an upstairs balcony which has a view over the uneven rooftops of the old village to the sea and the Akrotiri peninsula, and is equipped with a table and chairs. Dotted around the pool terrace and the courtyard are a number of raised flowerbeds and traditional terracotta pots that have been planted with different flowers and shrubs such as oleanders, cacti, geraniums, bougainvillea, gardenia and 4 sweet smelling jasmine bushes whose fragrance fills the air during our warm Cretan evenings. The pool terrace is equipped with a dining table and director's chairs, sun-beds and umbrellas. One of the many traditional features built out of local stone is the old "sterna" or well. The outside area is surrounded by a stone wall and has views to the mountains at the southerly end of the pool terrace.

We do ask that Reservations are made at least 2 weeks in advance to avoid disappointment. As with all our Villas, a discount is available for stays longer than two weeks.
All prices shown are for the Villa and not per person. As with all our Villas on the Island, we can arrange Car Hire through reputable companies. We also offer Airport Transport service.
All of our villas are available for Long Term Winter lets at Greatly Reduced Prices but the price during the winter does not include fuel for the central heating or electricity - these will be incur an additional charge.
