Home description

Villa Poppy is a newly built modern villa that is perfect for either families or couples who would like a peaceful setting with incomparable sea views and sunsets, but would also like to be only a few minutes away from the beach, tavernas, shops and other amenities. Located on a hillside just above the village of Plaka, the villa has absolutely stunning panoramic views of Souda Bay, The Akrotiri Peninsula, the Turkish Castle at Aptera, The White Mountains which are snow capped for 6 months a year, small villages, and acres of olive groves. Despite the lovely rural location surrounded by olive groves cypress trees and bougainvillea, Villa Poppy is only 3 minutes by car to the charming village square of Plaka, or 5 minutes to the beaches and many amenities in Almyrida.

Set just below the adjacent villa (Villa Nostalgia), never the less Villa Poppy has its own pool and private parking area. Each villa sits on half an acre of a 1 acre plot that shares a gate and perimetre walls, but that has been split into 2 distinct halves. The villa has been positioned in a way that guarantees privacy in a number of different areas including on certain areas of the pool terrace and the upstairs sun terrace. The villa has been furnished throughout with matching modern cherry wood furniture. The built in kitchen cabinets and bedroom wardrobes are also made out of this matching wood. The warm coloured draperies and textiles in the villa give a lovely summery feeling, and the metal and wooden beds in all of the bedrooms are quite charming.

The design of the villa has been carefully thought out in order to bring your living area into the outdoors, so that you can fully appreciate the outstanding views at all times. Therefore there are many terraces for both sun and shade, and an ample supply of garden furniture such as tables, chairs, umbrellas, a double swing-chair and sun-beds. The lovely pool and the spacious upstairs terrace are the most prominent features of the property, with both enjoying infinite sea and mountain views and gorgeous sunsets.

For larger groups or families who would like to be near each other but not in each other's pockets, Villa Poppy can be rented in conjunction with the next door villa, Villa Nostalgia, which is almost identical to Villa Poppy.

The Crete region

Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.

As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.

Villa Poppy is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding hand made leather bargains.

The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.

Plaka, Crete area

The main square in Plaka is only 1.1km from Villa Poppy and is still very much the focal point of village life. There are lovely shady mulberry trees under which the locals sit to watch the world go by whilst enjoying a delicious meal or even just an ice cold frappe. Plaka was one of the original village sets for the film “Zorba the Greek” and it still has quaint whitewashed houses and narrow streets leading off from the square. The modern outskirts of the village have expanded recently as have the facilities, which now include 3 excellent tavernas, 2 well stocked mini markets, a sweet shop, and 5 cafes.

The lovely village of Almyrida is only 2.2km from Villa Poppy, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 4 excellent tavernas, 9 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 5 mini-markets, 3 gift shops, the Villas Crete Holidays Tourist office owned and run by Frankie Miles, and an off-license. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans.

A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 35 minutes away by car.

Cooking classes and wine tasting set at a local winery can be taken by those of you who are interested. Guided walks led by experts in mountaineering and/or flora and fauna can also be arranged. For those of you who prefer to venture out on your own, a free copy of the guide book "Crete on the Road" by Frankie Miles comes with every villa. The book contains detailed directions to many well known and hidden sites, opening times and prices for all attractions, taverna recommendations, and the only existing map of the National Highway showing the exits and entrances.
