The region offers countless activities all year round: in winter, you may go downhill or cross-country skiing, snowboarding, or snow-shoeing. Summer-time offers mountain biking, hiking, sailing, windsurfing, swimming, canoeing, and horse-riding. Gérardmer, “La Perle des Vosges”, is close by with its grand lake, many shops, and good restaurants. Drive around the countryside and explore the charming villages of Alsace, go on a short trip to UNESCO world heritage city Strasbourg with its many cultural highlights, visit historic Colmar - the "capital of Alsatian wine", or tread in the foot-steps of Joan d'Arc in her birthtown of Domrémy. Your host, living in the farm house next door, will be more than happy to point out these and many other interesting destinations for you. Or maybe you prefer to just take a relaxing stroll in the beautiful pastoral countryside, lunch on a regional Munster cheese on the terrasse, and enjoy a good glass of wine by the fire-place - please feel completely at home!
The comfortable cottage features two seperate bedrooms and a couch-bed on the gallery, a complete kitchen with dining table, and a sitting area with fire-place, a complete bathroom with WC, bathtub / shower and a second seperate WC. The Lorraine region
Lorraine is one of the old historic provinces of France and Europe, established in the ninth century as the land of Lothair, grandson of the emperor Charlmagne. Lorraine has always been on the dividing line between the French speaking lands of the west and the German-speaking lands of the east. In bygone centuries, Germanic tongues were spoken in much of the region, as is witnessed by the many Germanic place names in the region. It is the only French region to border on three different foreign countries – Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany: it also borders on three other French regions, Alsace to the east, Champagne-Ardenne to the west, and Franche-Comté to the south. Outside of the industrial areas, and particularly in the west and south of the region, the departments of the Meuse and the Vosges, Lorraine is a rural region, with hills and forests. The department of the Vosges, which includes the western part of the Vosges mountains, is heavily forested. Epinal, the capital, is a small town in the high valley of the Moselle.
The use of the potato in Lorraine can be traced back to 1665 and it is used in various traditional dishes of the region such as the potée lorraine. The Breux potato, which takes its name from the village of Breux in the north of the Meuse, is considered to be excellent by experts due to the perfect conditions of the area. Smoked bacon is also a traditional ingredient of the cuisine of Lorraine. It is used in various traditional dishes of the region, including the famous quiche lorraine. The mirabelle plum of Lorraine is the emblematic fruit of Lorraine. It is used in pies and other desserts, as well as in alcoholic beverages. If you want to get into the Vosges mountain traditions, you must do some tasting! Munster-Gerômé cheese, smoked meats, pine tree honey or Vosges sweets, as well as the "Petits Crus Vosgiens" local liqueurs. Here, we are keen to use local fruit and vegetables and farm produce to satisfy all appetites.
Vosges is a department in the east of France, named after the local mountain range. The department contains the hometown of Joan of Arc, Domrémy. At the crossroads of latin and Germanic worlds, the Vosges are among the most forested departments in France. It is in the heart of this immense forest that Gérardmer, Xonrupt, and the valley of the Lakes have flourished. From hillside forests, below 600m altitude, to mountain forests, and finally reaching the subalpine forests at the treeline of the High-Vosges, hikers will come across beech, fir, spruce, rowan, sycamore trees. The forest is home to game: stags, deer, wild boar. In fact, it's more than possible to come face to face with one of them on a forest path. Foxes, badgers and mink also inhabit the forest; and a few rare protected species such as the Grand Tétras (a kind of grouse) or the lynx. Hovering in the azure sky, peregrine falcons and buzzards observe you whilst rivers and lakes abound with a variety of fish: trout, barbell, char; which delight herons and kingfishers. On the summits, chamois happily jump from rock to rock, mocking climbers and bounding in front of children.
Nature activities in summer and winter:
Ramble along paths in the midst of one of the largest pine forests in France, walk along streams and waterfalls merrily jumping from rock to rock, make your way across the high pastures and rocky ledges where a passing chamois will return your greeting, follow the lake shores. You are in hikers paradise! Grand hiking paths, discovery paths, family rambles or sporty hikes, more than 350 kms of marked paths, maintained by the Vosges Club and the Tourist Office, will guide the steps of lovers of authentic nature in the heart of preserved nature. In the home of Julien Absalon, world and Olympic bike champion, the mountain bike is king! In Gérardmer and Xonrupt-Longemer, more than 300 km of marked tracks will enable you to have a great time. On a family outing or a more sporty trip, everyone rides at their own rhythm. And if you prefer cycling on the road, climbing the Vosges passes or riding round the lakes will give you the pleasure of taking the fresh air in magnificent natural surroundings. Situated in the heart of the biggest area of cross-country skiing in the east of France (100 km of connected tracks), the ski areas of Gérardmer and of Xonrupt-Longemer allow everybody, whatever the level, to escape in the Vosges forest, on tracks properly marked out for skating or alternative styles.
